My brother is working on a Waukesha 283 direct injection diesel engine. The crank looks very good with one exception. All the rod and main bearings are at standard except the #1 rod journal. he isn't sure if it will clean up at .040 under. The local crankshaft specialty house (all they do) is suggesting welding up the #1 journal and grinding to stock. Does anyone have any experience with this type of repair and it's durability?

And no switching to a Cummins isn't an option.

Thank you,
A.P.

I used to work in amachine shop and there were only two welded cranks that I saw that did not break.one was in ajeep still going one was in a vette too chicken to put it back in. maybe the shop knows what they are doing maybe not.maybe it dont matter find another crank. if it has a 2.25" jornal I have a couple. if it has the bigger 2.4375 journal there are others available.

I would think if it is done by a shop like you said that Cranks and machine work is all they do, then it should work for you.

My grandfather always told us that when you hire work done you hire the best professionals you can, take their advice on the situation, and get out of their way, because that is their business and they will know more than you do about the situation...

Thats good advice, and if the guys that work with crankshafts everyday say it will work, thats good enough for me...

The 283ci Waukesha is a good engine if you take care of it, I have one running strong with 8000hrs on it in a 1655. And no I have not switched it to a Cummins... Yet... :-)

Good Luck

My father had an 1800 done 25 years ago and its still togather, but that tractor has only 25 hours of use on it since. If done correctly its supposed to work fine.
