I have a chance to buy both a 40 self propelled and a 18 pto pull type combine very close to home. Guy wants offers and did not give me a price. The 40 is a 8.5 out of 10 10 being new. by far the nicest old combine I have ever came across. Seems like there is oil on the clutch but is otherwise feild ready and runs like a swiss watch. unbeleivably nice for 50 years old. The 18 pull type was out side for 10 or more years. guy removed all belts and tires and put them in the shed and every thing seems good and loose except the scour kleen reel which was taken down by a snow drift and rats ate at some of the elevator flights. All the belts and tires are there and good also has the pickup and straw chopper for it all shedded. Any idea on a fair price for these? Any idea on the HP requirement for a 18 pull type? I'd like to put it behind my 77 diesel and have some fun on occasion. Thanks

My Dad and Uncle owned one of the first model 18s and they were excellent combines. We pulled with a 77 and a 88 and both did an excellent job. You could probably pull it in light material on level ground with a 66.

As for price the combine is not worth much. Probably $150 can get it and I certainly wouldn't offer over $250.

The 77 will work fine. I had a neighbor who had a 77 diesel and a 18 combine. Oliver used to show a 550 with an 18 combine. Probably a rare 18 would be the ones made in Branfort instead of Battle Creek. I think they only did that about one year. Does the 40 have a corn head, one of those all crop models?

No corn head. Not sure if its a all crop. I'm not sure where the 18 was made. How do I tell? Any where I can find combine serial #'s for these? Thanks

The all crop head was a corn head that cut the complete stalk off. Man I have not looked at a 40 or an 18 in 30 years. On the 40 if I am thinking correctly the serial number is over on the side by the engine somewhwere.
If the 18 is a Branfort built machine it should say made in Canada.

My grandpa had a 40 with the all crop head new, back then it was the only corn combine around or so I'm told. Had to take the chopper off in corn because it didn't have enuff power. I have no idea what ever happened to it. Serial number on this one is located under the platform. Thanks for the info.
