How good are Oliver Hay Balers?

I am in need of a good used small square hay baler for next season.
I would like some information about all of the old model Oliver balers #50, #620, #720 etc...

I need to know how well they hold up, ease of repair, parts avaiability but most of all, if properly timed and adjusted, how good do they bale hay (breakage etc..) I would pull the baler with either my Oliver 88 or my Minneapolis Moline ZTU.

Thanks in advance to all of the good old Oliver fans for your help!

Jim

We bought a 710 a little over a year ago and have been pretty happy with it. We have had some problems with the tying head on the one side, but most of the parts are pretty worn on it. We had some problems at first, bit the baler wasn't taken care of before we got it. Heston bought the oliver baler line and we have bought some new parts for the tying head fron a heston dealer I believe. I'm not positive where we got it but they were able to cross reference some of the parts numbers at our local AGCO dealer. I belive the 710 is about the size of a 620 and we usually use our 770 to power it. We're really happy with the capacity of the baler and it's a lot less agrivating baling waterways with this baler than our 14-t John Deere which likes to shear off pins about every 20 feet.

I really like my 62T. Parts can be hard but I believe you can find much of what you would need. The are gems when it comes to baling. My neighbor uses a high capacity JD and truthfully speaking, he is as impressed with my 62T and it's deep throat as he is with his $13,000 JD. I can imagine the 720 would be even better. We have used the 62T for 25 years, and many summers have baled $3000 bales without missing 1 bale.

We had a 620 (with a thrower) we baled with for years and years. We ran it with an Oliver 1655. Before that, we had a #60 baler we ran with an 88 and a 770. I can remember ever having a serious problem with either one. In fact, it seemed every sunny summer day I was behind the doggone things. They never broke down long enough for me to get away from the field...

I had a 62T and it was undoubtedly the best baler that I have used. Most of the knotter parts are generic enough that you shouldnt have any difficulties there. I bought a new New Holland 565 and it was a good baler, after you got everything adjusted for the conditions. But, when you were baling heavy straw and came to the end of the field to turn and tried to clean up some of the straw dribbled on the ends, you just totally screwed up a couple bales. Not the Oliver! That rotary feeder stuffs every bale nice and straight. The only thing it needed was a wider pick up to follow the big combines we use now. A little bit longer tongue would be nice to facilitate tight turns. It will work real sweet behind an 88.

Oliver balers, like most all their products were
durable machines. They seemed to ignore the forage
line, but certainly better than held their own on the rest. Balers were well built, yes the longer tongue on the 62T may have helped with the larger
tractors. Now, it would seem, how good are your
local dealers, tracking parts? There are places
stocking used/NOS Oliver parts in PA,MN,IA,etc.
If you have some local contacts, who will work with you on part needs, fine. There are many angry
people in the USA, owning a MF 175 tractor, who
wait & wait on parts. I would not want to buy into
that problem. Good luck.
