It's not really my tractor hauler. We have a 99 Ford Expedition with the 5.4 engine giving fits. Sometimes it will not stay running when you start it. It will just start and die over and over if you don't hold down the gas. Otherwise it runs fine. Acts to me like something in the idle setting. Anybody else had this problem? I suppose it is something electronic that costs a lot of money to fix. Guess I should have stuck with Chevy.

Try an IAC valve they have a tendency to stick closed giving you that idle concern also check the pcv vacuum hose that is coming out of the back of the manifold they also have a tendency to get a hole in the elbow and leak vacuum. have a nice day.

An EGR valve stuck in the open position will cause a massive vacume leak and that condion. Can be checked out by making a gasket to block exaust gas, make it from metal fom a beer can etc. Loosen the 2 bolts and slide in. 20 min work will tell if this is the problem.

Yes, but I have found that with the egr stuck open, they have a tendancy to lope going down the road, and will not idle correctly even above idle, might be blocked from completely closing by a piece of carbon though, a good take it out and blow the carbon out of it should clear it if it is that.

T.P.S., aka, Throttle position sensor, A.I.C. motor, aka, Automatic Idle Control, is a few of the possibilities. And leave the Chebbies alone. Also, possible vacum leak, just name another of the possibles.

Another though that I just had was the Map, or Maf sensor, for the mass air flow, can do the same thing sometimes.

Also could be just a dirty throttle body bore.
