I just bought a cockshutt 550 gas, with a hercules engine (4 cyl.) I want to turn it into a pulling tractor, but need some help and advice finding performance parts. I want to completely rebuild the engine. Does anyone know where I can get performance parts i.e. pistons, cams, throttle body, head, etc. And maybe looking to add a turbo. But the only problem is I don't know where to get anything and I want to spend around 4 grand. I will be running in a open class, no rev limit, no speed limit, just balls to the walls. Farthest one wins. Need power, and HELP!!!!! ! Thank you for all your help.

Today I talked to a buddy of mine that worked in R&D at Hercules for 20 years before the reorganized. (they are stiil in buisness, it is a rumor that they went competely out of buisness, but they mostly downsized) He still works there and told me of some neat parts that swap right onto that engine, but going to a 2300 is a good idea. There is also some good part swaps for them also.

Thank guys for all your help so far! I have a few questions. Were would i get a 2300 engine? And how much $$$. And what parts can i swapt right into the Go198 that i already have. Today i took the block to a engine place to get it tested and bored and stroked. Is it a good idea to get some custom pistions and connecting rods from Wiseco? How about a cam? Also, I have a wide front end right now, but it is cracked and needs some new parts. I noticed that in 1958 (the year i have) they also came with a narrow front end. Do you guys know if i could just swap to a narrow and save some wieght? You guys talked about the 2300 pretty highly, but is the GO198 really that bad? would it be worth it to swap? Thank you so much for all your help.

Adam

I'd be interested in more info about Hercules parts and replacements for the GO198 & GO298.
Do you have a web address or an email??

I agree with Mack! The GO198 is a nice little motor but parts are very hard and expensive to find. There biggest problem is in the crank and finding oversize bearings are next to impossible.I have axcess to some parts and can give you a couple other people to get in touch with. I have several Cockshutt 35's and 550's which both used this motor and a bsic rebuild is never less then about $1800 unless you have your own shop. The GO198 was noted for its high torque for such a little 4 cylinder but the replacement 2300 will be better. If you persue this I could be interested in leftover GO198 parts for my own tractors. Just my opinion Irv

Why don't you do some checking on the 2300 Hercules engine? I have seen one pull and it pulls really good. These were later model engines and were used in power units and construction equipment. They have a big crank journal and can be offset ground.

I see Brad did jump in which is good and I was hoping a few more would be in by now. First of what are you running for fuel, Gas, Diesel, Alcohol? Have you had the block sonic tested to see what you can run for a maximum bore and see what you can stroke it to. Also what do you call maximum RPM? Do you want to sacrifice a little High RPM horsepower for torque rise? Remember Horsepower is how fast you get there, Torque is what it takes to start the load and keep it moving. Also this engine is not going to be like a small block Chevie where you purchase all these items off the shelf.

I've never worked on on of those, but high rpm "balls to the walls" is what I do best. I would be willing to take a look at it. give me a call @330-939-0124 I probably won't be around the phone so leave a message and i'll get back to you
