Did Super 77s come with an under dash tachometer/hourmeter? I have what appears to be a Super 77 with cowl/dash sheetmetal from a 770. It has a tach cable coming from the engine, but no gages. (The serial number plate is attached to the cowl, and therefore is a 770.) How do I determine whether I have a Super 77 with the wrong cowl, or a 770 with the wrong front end sheet metal?

Dale

John & Aberdale Farm: The last three digits in the serial number tell us that it is a 770. The "7" digit means it is of the Super 77, 770 family, and last two digits "35" tell us that it has a C-35, 770 high speed transmission.

Tachs were standard on 1957 Super 77 tractors. There was also a field installation kit where the could be installed on tractors before this.
I would check the Oliver casting number for the block which is located kind off behind the starter. The 185XXX numberis the Waukesha casting. If you have a 1M100 with a letter after that you have a super 77. 770 tractors have a six digit number with a letter after that. don't have a 770 to look at untill later this week but I think the first 3 digits are 104 XXX with an A after that. There is an 88 out my way that has a dash from an 880 on it. I hope this helps some. 1957 Supers also have the word Oliver stamped in the fenders and 12 volt key start plus smaller headlights. This may help you date it if it turns out to be a Super 77 and not a 770

Thank you for the reply and the information.

I checked the engine casting. The number below the 185XXX number was 104306A. Based on your input, that would lead me to believe that I have a 770 with Super 77 sheet metal up front. The serial number plate reads 90 753 735. Therefore, the serial number would be 90753, making it a 1960 model I believe. Does this sound correct?

Yes it would be a summer 1960 model.
There are some other little changes between a Super 77 and a 770 send me a U2U on the hartparroliver.org site and you check them if you are still in doubt
