Hi guys
Have an Oliver 1850 D that I would like to paint this year. Where is the best place to get paint and find out the right colors. I don't want paint from the local farm store, usually fades right away.
Thanks,
Nate

Read RB's post below about the 'right' colors. His method is best; to experiment with certain blends comparing them to a protected area of a good, original tractor. I too have found the clover white available from AGCO or Napa (Martin Senour) to have too much green tint. I think the only thing that looks worse than having the white with too much green tint in it is when people paint the grill, spears, and trim bright gloss white, which is also not correct. I tried 5 different blends of the clover white blended with a little gloss white to lighten it before I found one that was the 'true' clover white'. You won't use a lot of white, so it's worth the time and a little wasted paint to experiment and get it right. Same with the green, although most are close. Your bargain Oliver or Meadow Greens are often too dark. Meadow green is just a little darker than, dare I say it, John Deere green. I have used the Martin Senour Meadow Green without any lightening or darkening and it is very good, as is AGCO's Meadow Green, although AGCO's is noticeably darker green than Martin Senour.

I have used the AGCO paint for I like the correct colors like Sam and Luther said. Nothing beats the clover white on the rims and grill. Really sets the tractor off. I have also use the MS paint from NAPA. TSC also carries a paint that works well too. All need hardener to last and become resistant to the weather. I have success with all of them. I just have a thing about the correct colors or not at all. Enjoying your work on the tractor is the real key. Good paint willl just keep it nice longer.

I researched the right "color" question when I painted my 1955. The resident "experts" on the Oliver board in 2002 told me that the clover white from AGCO was too green compared to the original clover white from the factory. I bought a spray can of clover white from AGCO and compared it to NAPA's paint and the original color I found on the inside of the hood side pieces with the Oliver decals on the outside. (The inside area had never been exposed to the sun.) I found that the old "Experts" were right. The NAPA color was the closest to the original color, but it was still a little too green. Some people have suggested mixing a little white paint with the other paints to get the true clover white color.

I was unaware that NAPA carried a clover-white paint be it in spray cans or quarts. The Agco spray cans (any factory spray can) is so much better than napa's. Martin Seniour paints are some excellent quality paints, but how close is the match? Agco should have all the codes too make the paint so how could one compare tints? From what I've seen(and sprayed) any automotive paint is better than a "factory" paint. For many reasons, if you can buy or match your paint with an automotive paint, please do so! No orange peel effect! And it goes on so much easier!

During the summer of 2002 I repainted the clover white part of my 1955. I bought the paint from NAPA, including the hardner and the developer. I had to mix it together. It was a little work and was not cheap, but it was well worth it. The paint job came out good and still looks good. I believe NAPA uses Martin Senoiur Paint. I highly recommend it.

Whichever paint you use, hardener will increase the fading resistance.

My brother repainted my Oliver 1850 D and 1855 D a couple of years ago . Bought the paint at AGCO dealership near my farm . It was the only place I would fine the clover white to do the rims , grill etc so I just went ahead and bought all the paint there . I have been pleased with how it has held up but these tractors are kept in a closed shed except when in actual use . Other may have suggestions on a better quality paint or one with a cheaper price .

The Agco paint is good stuff especially if you add hardener to the mix. It's not cheap but trust me it'll last along time and make all that work seem worth it. I'm trying to find paint codes for White's, I'd like to use an automotive paint because I seem to get the orange peel look from the factory paint. Maybe somebody reading this can tell us how to avoid "the peel". Don't get me wrong, it looks great, but not "factory". And please buy the clover white, they look so much better with the original colors! Good luck!!
