I'm still haveing problems with my 880 diesel. It's compleatly rebuilt every thing new including the fuel system. Book timing for the roosa pump non auto advance is 6 deg BTDC to get it to run decent we have it a 12 deg BTCD. at 6 Deg it would only pop, miss, smoke raw fuel and generaly run very poorly unless under load when it would streighten out. Also it would not start even in 85F. Runnabilty got gradualy better untill peaking at 12 deg but still pops when cold at random and still does not start with out the preheat both really bother me. Generaly runs decent when warm now but still smokes a bit white "fuel". I've had the engine back apart to verifi the timing of the cam and flywheel to tdc copmpression stroke all apperars to be correct. Had it to 3 seperat mecanics and fuel system experts. All stumped. It has about 8 hrs run time on it now first 2 hrs spent tring to get it to run decent and next 3 on a fertilizer spreader last 3 I put it on my big disk and ran it at a good load most of the time. Seems to have good power little blow by and no oil comsumption. Any ideas on what could be wrong? or is this normal? My 77 diesel starts right up down to 55 or so with out pre heat and dosen't pop or miss unless it's cold started at <15F.

CLEAN THE CARBON OUT OF YOUR PRE-COMBUSTION CHAMBERS.

You have a lot of variables here. The popping at random. Have you determined if it is one or two cylinders or if they all do it? It would have been great if you could have put the disk on before the fertilizer cart as you need a load to help seat a chrome ring set. Also does your head have the intakve valve seats in it. 1961 is when they were introduced. Was the valve recession checked when you had the engine apart? How is your piston protrusion? Were the rods reconditioned and if so were they cut with the correct center to center distance? When you got done disking and shut it off how did it start? White smoke like you describe is a compression problem which you reinforced by telling us aboutthe hard starting problem. If you pull it with another tractor for a couple hundred feet at a good rate of speed and then push the fuel shut off in, how does it run? Can you get it on a dyno?

I've tried to nail it down to one or two cylenders but it seems they all do it. The firtilizer cart was a fairly good load at times but verible 5th gear up hills but you cost down the other way. I beleive it has the valve seats and new were put in. Mid 1961 serial # tractor. I was looking for my invoice for the head but pulled it out of the file for somthing a while back and now don't remember where I put it. Per advice from here I specificly requested that valve recession be checked and the machenest stated it was in spec. It was also pressure checked. I never checked piston protrusion but think it came up to or at flush just like the old pistons did. I have had some one ask me if it were possible that I got flat top gas pistions by accident. I have no clue what a gas piston looks like. These looked the same as the units I took out but I never really compaired that close. Std bore clevite set. New pin bushings were put in and #6 rod was replaced berring spun in the original rod. All was ok and appeared ok and was professionaly done but I did not measure myself. I will try and pull it with anoter tractor if I can find some help. When done disking and shut off it started right up on first turn and will most of the time right after being run and warmed up but if left setting for a half hour or so with engine still warm to the tuch it starts hard again but not as hard as cold, crank time 10-15 sec. When cold it will not start with out the preheat 65-80F. It does not start much better cold after having been on the disk. I may put it on a pump requireing 55 hp in the morning for a few hrs. I don't have easy access to a dino but could haul it to the dealer but thats costly. Do 880 diesels normaly start pretty good? The gas piston thing has me woundering but is that even possible? 4 ring pistons. Going to dig out the recepts and dubble check. Thanks much, Adam Suess

Original equipment the 880 gas and diesel use the same pistons. Send me a P M on the HPOCA page.

Check compression first.

We had a similar problem with our 880, I don't know if this will solve your problem but we put a new mechanical fuel pump on the motor and solved our problem. Don't know if this helps but it is some advice.
