What should be the compression readings for an Oliver 88 diesel? How much variation is allowed? I know that I have seen them in a service manula some where but can not find them at the moment.

Thank you,
A.P.

With good cranking speed 50 pounds or less in variation, 300 is the minimum and 350 makes them start a lot better.

Thank you for the help. I do have another question; is the combustion chamber the same size in an 88 diesel head vs a Super 88? They are both listed as 15.5 to 1 compression but the 88 shows 231 cubes and the Super 88 265 cubes. Are the valve sizes the same? Any other differences that you are aware of.

Thank you,
A.P.

INTAKE VALVES ARE BIGGER ON SUPER 88, COMBUSTION CHAMBERS ARE THE SAME, PRECOMBUSTION CHAMBERS ARE ALSO THE SAME.

Say that with tongue in cheak. When the Super 88 was introduced, the exhaust valves were also larger. Than when starting problems developed they recalled those heads, put a sleeve in the combustion chamber and the size of the exhaust valve became the same as the 88. Not all got changed. I have run across 2 in the past 10 years when I did the diesel head class in fact I traded for one

Would you have any photos that would show the difference?

Find me on hartparroliver web site and send me a P. M. Photos of what? What do you have in mind. I think you are in a "pulling frame of mind"

Although I normally in a pulling frame of mind this does not involve pulling. We are trying to get my fathers Super 88 diesel together for a plow day in what is likely to be our last chance to do it with him. The engine was rebuilt a number of years ago and has low hours but it has been a hard starter since the rebuild. We thought the rings did not seat but with the head off we are finding four large cracks, the combustion chamber does not taper towards the exhaust valve like another cracked head we have, instead it goes down square. We suspect that the head repair shop that welded and "repaired" the head years ago took a few "shortcuts". Plow day is just over a week away and right now we do not have a good head.
