I have a chance to buy a Super 55 diesel for $800. It's complete and straight, but has low compression, and will not start. I suspect the previous owner used liberal amounts of ether. It probably needs a complete overhaul with new pistons and sleeves, and a valve job. Is this a good model tractor? Is it priced right for the condition? Are O/H parts available, and how much will I probably have in the rebuild? Is it difficult to work on compared to other tractors?

Dale

I don't agree to pass it over. If it is all there and straight it would be a nice tractor fixed up, but it depends what you want it for. If you are just looking for something to work with right away, shop around, but if you want it to restore, I would snap it up. Where is it anyhow. If it's complete I know lots of guys would take it sight unseen for $800. I would do it if it's close enough to me. But I am guessing it is East of the Rockies. Does it have external hydraulics? Power steering? You would have $800 right there.

You can buy a good running tractor for what the rebuild is going to cost you... you might want to shop around.

I do not think so. There are a number of changes in the Super 55 gas or diesel. Do you have a serial number. Does it try to smoke (smoke will probably be white) when you try to start it? Do you have a serial number? What do you intend to use the tractor for. If going sleeves and pistons, I would go with 3-5/8 bore. I have had good luck with the old Perfect Circle (Now NAPA) liner kits. Definatley put a full set of inserts in the head and set the valve recession on all the valves. It makes a big difference compression wise.
