The manual for my Cockshutt 550 says to use SAE 10W oil in the hydraulics, and use SAE 5W oil in extremely cold temperatures. Does this refer to detergent oils? Would it be safe to use todays hydraulic oils (32 or 55 weights)? Thanks

I use Shell Fleet SAE 10W in my 1953 Massey harris and it works good. It is a detergent motor oil but is low foaming. It says right on it for hydraulic sytems where a low foaming oil is required.

I guess I would ask you as to what will be the lowest tempeature will be when you are using the tractor. Also your tractor is close to 50 years old. There is probably a little wear in the hydraulic system which may cause internal leakage in the pump leading to excessive heat.Your SAE number refer to the viscosity as do the 32 and the 55 but they are ISO standard. I did have a cross over chart. ISO 55 is a heavy oil. Have you thought of a multiviscosity API s type motor oil?

Don't use detergent oil, use the 10W non-detergent

A certain pump manufacture that I worked with has proven that theory which was popular years ago has not much merit anymore. I wondered how quick someone would jump on the statement I made.
