Just got an OC 3 with a loader, model is listed as OC 3 42 IND and serial number 3503061. What year is this machine? Any other info appreciated; I have shop and owners manuals ordered from this site but they have not arrived yet. From what I hear these crawlers are geared a little high for dozer work but I bought it for the loader. Thanks.

Loader or dozer, they are geared way too high. You'll be slipping the clutch and/or lugging the engine most of the time. An aux. trans. makes it a whole different machine. It was an Oliver option, or can be made. It brings the original 1st gear ground speed at high RPM from 2.01 MPH down to .64 MPH in range 1, or 1.08 MPH in range 2.

I have a 1954 OC-3 with a Ware Loader. I use it regularly for lifting and light loading. I agree that it is too fast for heavier work. My ***** 420C with loader is much more usable primarily because of the gearing and street pads. I am interested in seeing photos of the aux transmission setup. My email is jjohnson@mpcdayton.com Thanks!

As the other guy mentioned, go to cletrac.org My photos and data are posted there. I've put up photos and some instructions for fabrication, and also of the original factory-made setup. And yes, the Deere is geared much better. A Cletrac/Oliver HG or OC3 has ground speeds (without the aux.) as follows:

1st - 2.01 m.p.h., 2nd - 3.19 m.p.h., 3rd - 5.24 m.p.h., Rev. - 2.33 m.p.h. Compared to a John Deere 420 crawler:
1st - .875 MPH, 2nd - 2.25, 3rd - 3, 4th - 5.25 Putting the aux. into the Cletrac and using it in range one yields the following: 1st - .64 m.p.h., 2nd - 1.02 m.p.h., 3rd - 1.68 m.p.h., Rev. - .74 m.p.h. or second range as follows: 1st - 1.08 m.p.h., 2nd - 1.72 m.p.h., 3rd - 2.83 m.p.h., Rev. - 1.26 m.p.h.

Take a look at cletrac.org. I saw some stuff while looking the other day and I was thinking it showed up to 3 different transmissions.

The auxilliary tranny used is a Model A Ford car transmission with a homemade "bellhousing" made from a piece of well casing. There was an article on it within the past couple of years in the HPOCA magazine.

Not entirely true . . . the aux. trans. was indeed a factory made setup sold by Oliver but actually manufactured by Tractor Specialies of California. The setup you speak of was homemade and the article stunk (in my opinion). The guy had most of the work done (did not do it himself) and very little tech. info was provided. The factory setup used a modified Ford Model A (car, not truck) three speed trans. along with a custom cast-iron bell housing. I've got one in my barn and can provide photos to anyone interested. I have also made the aux. setups myself using a modified Cletrac bellhousing and an improved, removable driveshaft. The Model A transmission is well suited sinced it is very heavy duty and has full ball-bearing support on both the input and the output.

Thanks for the info; will be using it mostly to load soft stuff and pick up remants of a dismantled barn. No digging or dozing, just lifting.
