I run an 88 block bored to 424 and run 4th & 5th gears up to 6500 lbs with 18.4-34 tires. run around 2600 rpm max. do pretty well with it. big cubes arent always the answer - getting the power to the ground you have is the best approach.lots of head work makes an oliver run!
a good 320 crank helps to!!

Massy used a 320 ci in motor in the 1100 gas early 1970's the crank and head will bolt to an 88 block no problems. and the crank is preasure fed as far as oiling. I run 424 ci. and have done alot to the head and also made a header as the exhaust manifold is very heavy and hard to find. Its just a very duable combination and it can be made alot bigger than mine. But I didnt want to redo mine every year. Takes the fun and pocket book out of it, The 320 heads are very popular in our area. if you find one buy it even if you dont use it someone will buy it.

A good friend of mine used to say how far you want to go down the track is proportional to the size of the checking account. I have a question for Olie 88, What length stroke are you running? I could not tell for sure if you meant 4-1/4 bore or 424 cubics. Have you seen any 320 heads on the gas 88's? Those are nice heads.

Not tryin to be smart, but your not gonna run 4th or 5th gear in 6000lb class with anything less than 550cubes. And even than, you would need a pretty loose track.

I know, however I see an 88 pull 4th in 6000, and just spins out before powering out, I can't say if its stock block or not!

How fast do you think he is going. He might have an industrial rear end in there which means what looks like fourth to you from the ground is actually only second gear. Fourth and second are opposites in industrial and agriculture rear ends. If he is runnin over 5 mph, chances are he has some kind of stroker in there. You can bore and stroke factory 88 blocks out to well over 500 cubes and they dont look a darn bit different from the outside. Even if he is running 10-47 gears in there, which is about 6.32 miles an hour with 18-38s in fourth gear, he has a lot more than 100 horse power for sure. Not gonna get more than 100 horse outa stock 1800-1850-55 gas motor and a lot of places wont even let you pull cause you got a 12 port head. 90 horse is very acheivable with a 880 motor, high dome pistons and lots of head work, ect. That way you at least still have the 9 port head which is 100% legal anywhere.

It bolts in but the upper water neck on the head had to be fabricated.I personally have not done this but know someone who has.I'd like one in my Super 88 someday.

Motor will bolt right in, there are few things that are snug though.
