I have recently purchased a new cluster gauge from Korves Oliver for the 550 and discovered that it needs a Neg ground system to operate properly. I took the opportunity to rewire the voltage regulator and generator with new wires, and I polarized the regulator. So far so good! Everything works hunkydory (amp idiotlight, oil idiotlight, fuel gauge and water temp). However, I now notice that whenever I turn on my headlight switch, both idiot lights (amp & Oil)light up and won"t go off until I switch off the headlights. I had the generator tested for output and it is producing 50+ Amps, so I don"t think I"m short of power to run 4 headlights. Any ideas to why these idiot lights are wacky??

Thanks

Unless I was trying to keep the tractor original, I would not spend two seconds on the generator, and would swap to a delco 12V alternator quicker than you can spit.

Boy if I remember the gauges sense VOLTAGE, When you speeded the engine up voltage also increased and made the idiot lights go out. I am surprised you can get 50 amps out of that generator! Have you had a voltmeter on the system.

Yes you are correct, idling at 500 rpm the idiot lights are on, but upon reving up to 1000+ rpm they go out. The generator output was measured on a bench at the shop where it was rebuilt.

Now you have me interested, I still would like to know where the 50 amps came from when Delco rated them at 20. Have you put a voltmeter on the system? On which terminal or how do you have the lights hooked in the system?

The lights are wired to the "L" terminal of the regulator

Answer me this: Have you had a voltmeter on the charging circuit and or do you have say 14.2 volts when your idiot lights are on?

I have 14.7 volts with no lights on and 14.5 volts when the light switch is on (with idiot lights). I took this measurement at the "L" terminal of the regulator.
