you should not have a problem with staying light enough to pull in 4000. I pull a 49 77 and have plenty of power for open or up to 5000 stock. Mine has the big sleeves and pistons in it straight from the factor through. I think you will enjoy yourself with it. they are simple, easy to run old tractors.

The Super 77 diesel had a max corrected belt horsepower of 45.94. It should get in 4500 no problem with light rims. I have even seen some gas 77's in 3500, though being a super and a diesel it will weigh a fair bit more. If I were you I would look for a Super 88 or 880 diesel which will have 15 more ponies and still be able to make 4500.

According to some rule changes here I believe the Super 88 I have isn't supposed to pull lighter than 5000lbs now.It will go in the 4500 with pressed steel wheels and no belt pulley.

I can't find any record of the diesel being tested at Nebraska. But the gas was tested twice and a propane version was also tested. These three developed about 37 hp on the belt and 33 on the drawbar. I have a 77 gas right now and my dad had a 77 diesel. I think they are about the same in horsepower. Weight is 4866 according to Nebraska test 425. The diesel may be 100 pounds heavier. This weight does not include ballast in the tires or wheel weights. Those items brought the test weight up to 8023 pounds. I have ballast in mine and I'd guess it weighs about 6000#.
