I had the head re-rebuilt all new and all on the better end of the specification range. And for J the pistons come up flush with the top of the sleeve using a streight edge. I was fairly sure that we had found the problem and timed it back to 6 deg BTDC previous to the head rework it would not run timed at 6 and would not start with out nearly burning out the preheater in 70F weather. It now starts in 43F weather and will idle at 6 deg but at speeds above 1,400rpm it starts to missfire and smoke but runs alright with a load. What's wrong? I've had the pump rebuilt and tested several times. Despite what the diesel shop tells me what else could it be? Wrong injector nossles? All were put in new, all new internals on the roosa pump as well.

All the timing in the world is for nothing if your injectors are not set properly. If one pops at 1200 psi and the other one pops at 2400psi the engine is going to run like crap. Spray pattern would also be effected. The injectors could be popping all over the place.

Hi
There is a lot of talk about measuring pistons, rods, and stuff like that.More than likely not the problem. Your pump itself is not the problem, more
than likely, your problem lies with the timing gears. As these tractors get older, these problems are getting a little more prevalent. What's happening is as the gears wear you lose a couple degrees here, another there, and before you know it, it starts to affect your high idle. Now you probably want to know how to fix it.Short of changing out gears your best bet is to advance the timing on the pump a degree at a time till the flutter goes away.(Hopefully there is enough room for the advance)This problem is not yours alone. This problem is has been showing up for years, and it shows no preference as to the color of your tractor.(Count your self lucky you don't own the other green, they have one more set of gears to wear before the pump)If you have more questions or need anything write or call, please. jerrystractor@aol.com
Thanks,
:) Jerry

Thanks for measuring those pistons. Did you measure them one at a time? Did you use a feeler gauge to check any on them. Have you timed it say at 8 degrees BTDC?

They come up flush -.000 to.002 using a feeler gage and streight edge. very crude measurements on my part. Done One at a time done with the pan off to get as close to tdc as I could. Is this right? Pump is a non advance DBGFC 629-5BH 60861A 25 30. Running with out the manifold cold at idle it misses on 1 2 3 and 4 mostly 2 and 4. #2 is the worst by far. Never misses on 5 or 6 at cold idle and hits on all warmed up idle. Warmed up it mostly misses on 1 and 3 but also 3, 4 and 5 to a lesser degree this is at 1,200 rpm. Over 1,400 no load rpm it misses on all at random. Under heavy load 3 pops every so often. It has good power and responds very well to the govener. I'm going to advance it again. It ran befor at 12* BTDC but would not start and dev eloped as limp while cranking. The limp is now gone and it starts at 6* so If I advance it, it should run again and now start but my thinking is I should not have to do this. The pump shop takled about air timing it some how. I'm not familiar with that process. I wounder if the injectors have the right nossle I found the invoice and the right parts are listed but?? I should switch #2 and #6 injectors and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

I think your pump is probably fine. What model DBG (complete number ) Roosa do you have? Also how did you verify that you are at 6 degrees? Does your pump have an advance added? When you had the connecting rods reconditioned, how did they do it-bore or hone or hone the big end bore the small end to length and do you have at least one original piston left? Have you taken the exhaust manifold off and determined if you have a flutter in all the cylinders when it misses or does it seam to be one or two cylinders?
