I am using a 1957 Oliver Super 77 Diesel for tractor pulling. I need more power. What are the best ways to get power starting with the cheapest.

Find a good load for 30 hrs or so and turn the screw up after that. Large Plug on the back side of the pump remove that and inside is a nut that uses a flat screw driver turn it in a bit. Best if you have a load to know when it hits peak as you will loose power if turned too far. Best to get it broke in good if it was rebuilt not long ago it make a huge power difference on oliver diesels in my experience. The smoke screw will give you more power as well.

I had a super 77 diesel rebuilt to 770 factory spec in 1997-98 (there was not much difference super 77 to 770 If I remember right) installed in a 770 tractor. It had no power at first. While running on a mill I played with the fuel screw untill it ran at the power my plain 77 did. Tornado came through the same day and it ended up on a generator for a while 70% to 90% veriable load but pto rpm. After that you could not stop it. It would pull my 4340 3-16" 8-10" deep clay loam soil in 4th gear high (it had a power buster) 16' feild cultivator in 4th high. I don't know how much power it had but it was alot more than rated. It pulled most loads the same as the 1650 that replaced it, that was dynoed at 70 hp. Lots of pure black smoke. At night it would have a 6" orange flame from the muffler going up hill. Shelled out 2 ring gears in 1,000 hrs. It was fun to drive but not so fun to fix. There was photos of it in action in one of the great northern oliver collectors scrap books. I think if you spend some time with it you can get more power out of it with out much cash. Good luck

Just turn the fuel too it, you will not get more than 60hp because of the pre-combustion chamber in the head. You can turn too much fuel, and up the oil pressure they only run 5lbs. pressure. Its been a long time since I worked with one much, I think there is a plug on right side of motor near the front that has a spring in side of it, put a heaver spring in it that will up your oil pressure. GOOD LUCK

How much horsepower are you looking for? Define the word cheap? Parts only now 500 dollars, a thousand, two thousand plus?

What have you done to it so far? What are the rules? What is the size of the engine? Are you checked on the dyno when you are finished pulling?

The tractor is bone stock. Rules say no turbos and stock appearing.

Well first I would make it a 232 engine with new sleves and pistons and if I could find a later 1550-1555 head I would get it. As far as horsepower goes, are you looking for horsepower or torque? What are the rules. Are you allowed in increase in RPM? A 232 Super 77 made a nice 50 Horse Power Farm tractor 40 years ago. A 7.5 millimeter hydraulic head and an internal spring governor might be considered but do you need to explain why the governor does not look like any one elses? Or do you have one of the less than 50 Super 77 diesels with a factory Roosa Pump?

Hey J., how much difference in that machine and my 880? I'm waiting hopefully to get some ideas for mine it's stock turning 55 h.p. I can't turbo because of rules. I have changed the stock intake to an 1800 intake haven't dynoed it but that seemed to help. It's had a total rebuild to stock specs also has a roosamaster pump. Thanks for any ideas!!
