I was dynoing my 880 saturday and blew the head gasket. I read on here a while back that you could over torque the a small amount. is this true, if so how much can i go?

Assuming you have good mating surfaces (head and deck), I go about 20% over specified torque values. This seems to hold just fine on 310s and 283s I've done, with the 310s running 140-150 hp.

Let me ask you this: Where did it fail and what have you done to determine the cause of the failure? Also which head gasket are you using and did you check the torque on the bolts when you took the head off?

I have pulled my 283 head about 20% over tork and it seemed to make it hold better then before. You run a risk of breaking a head bolt or cracking the head when you go over tork vaue, but it can help seal a head gasket sometimes.

Good luck and be careful
