I want to change my Pos ground to a neg ground on my 1961 Cockshutt 550.
My gauges include a Fuel gauge, Amps gauge, Oil press. gauge and a water temp gauge. Which of these gauges need to be switched as well?

Thanks

Oliver Governor problem in reply to 550Doug, 08-01-2005 14:32:42
Help!

The governor on my Oliver 550 quit working. The motor runs fine, just can't control the speed. I have it stripped down it seems that the linkage and lever seem to be working allright. What is the next step? How major is it to replace it and are parts available?

Thanks

Doug, Im more familiar and experienced with John Deere and hang out over there, but can offer some strictly "theoretical" opinions as an engineer.

1) I agree with Bob, if your fuel gauge is a bi metal heat activated unit, it dont care what direction the current flows (heats up a metal strip deflecting it) so it wouldnt need changed. HOWEVER, if the gauge is a galvo type the direction of current determines the direction of the needles deflection and its polarity would have to be reversed. Just give her a light temporary touch the wire try n see to determine it it still deflects in the right direction or not??

2) I suspect the oil pressure gauge is mechanical with a small oil line ran to it and is not even electrically connected, but if its an electrical with a sensor all bets are off.

3) Same as 2 above for the heat gauge. Does it have a capillary tube to a sensor on the engine or is it wired???

4) The AMMETER definitely has to have its leads swapped or it will read bass ackwards.

After your rewired YOU MUST POLARIZE THE GENERATOR. Assuming this is a Class A similar to the Delco system, do that by momentarily flash jumping a wire from the VR's BAT terminal over to its ARM (or GEN) terminal and you should get a small spark.

Assuming a gas tractor and an external battery powered coil ignition (i.e. not a mag) I would also reverse the coil leads with the - leading to the distributor and + receiving switched ignition voltage from a switch or via any external ballast resistor.

Should only need to change the amp guage. The oil and temp gauge should be piped and sensered with out use battery power. The fuel guage will not care about what ground is.

If the temperature gauge "movement" is "thermal", it will operate the same on either ground polarity.

If it has a magnetic "movement", it MAY be innacurate, if the battery ground polarity gets switched.

I'm not sure which movement movement your gauge would have, but switching the battery polarity on certain madels of the OTHER green tractors DOES affect the accuracy of the fuel gauge, so that's something to watch for.
