Hello,

I am looking at getting a white 2-85 4wd tractor,
What is the general opinion of this tractor?
How is fuel efficency?
Is the MFWD mechanical or hydraulic?
Does the tranmission have any power shift?
Any comments about putting a loader on it?
How about Road speed?
Thanks,

It's comparable to a 1755, closed center hyd., Perkins deisel, over/under, somewhere around 25-28 MPH I think. We rented a 2wd model a few years back when our 1755 blew, seemed to have good power, about 85HP. Perkins are pretty easy on fuel. I think the MFWD is mechanical as that's what our neighbor's 2-135 is. Loader should be fine, many loader manufacturers make a modle that will fit. I would recomend one that ties to the rear axel to help keep the stress off the engine tub.

Donavan, why are you worried about stress on th e tub? Evidently you've never run the 20 series jd's where the motor mounts on a loader tractor seem to always strip out. Actually, I think they had problems with that until the 00 series where the tub design (just like Oliver) began being used. We've had loaders on 1850's and 105's that I thought we could use for clearing trees! That frame isn't going to give it's built like a brick !!#$% house! Don't be scared of putting any kind of stress on that frame it can handle it!

I say this only because the 1600 I'm rebuilding had a cracked tub betweent the engine mounts, and it never had a loader on it. I've now got one from a 1655 deisel on it.

that's got to be something to see, I pretty much thought the tubs were invincible. Sounds like quite a project to switch that around. By the way I've seen some photo's of the 1600, would really like to see finish photos when your done. Good luck!

Yeah, my heart really sank when I found it. It started at the top and went atleast 1/2 way down, on the right side. To switch the tubs over I bought a 12 pt. impact socket from the Matco man. I used a 1/2" breaker baer w/ an 18" cheater pipe and all of my weight to crack them loose. I used all of my weight to tighten them back down again as well. I had to switch over the front axel and all, but that part wasn't too bad, although I wouldn't have bought new tie rods and had them chromed if I never had to take them apart in the first place. Owell...
