There is a 1655 in an upcoming auction and I'd like to check out the relative merits of that model. It is a diesel with no apparent leaks but I'm going to check out more closely. How do I verify that it is a 283 engine and not a replacement?
What are its differences with the 1650 and what are its weaknesses?
Thanks

I have a 1655 diesel & two 1650's (1 gas & 1 diesel). The diesels are easy on fuel but the gas one really drinks a lot of gas.
The only problen I have had with all three is that they have all needed a hydraulic pump.

I'm gonna go with the others as well. We've got a 1600, which came before the 1650, 55 and white 2-70. It's got plenty of power for it's size, and the hydra power is nice. It's about the same thing as the multi-power on the masseys, free wheels in low. Same thing goes for the over/under, it free wheels in low. There should be a serial number stamped on the front of the engine, by the alternator if I'm not mistaken. Some one will correct me if I'm wrong. The 16's really don't have any major weak points as far as I'm aware, and the deisels are very good on fuel. Ours is a gasser but we only use it on things like the blower etc.

We've also got an 1855 which has the over/under. Very nice thing to have on the chopper or anything that has a variable load like plowing, baling, etc...

Can't go wrong w/ a 1655.

I would agree with Tpost-one of the best tractors ever made, very handy to have around. I have to correct him though, on a few points. The 55 series tractors all had "over/under hydraul shift" this was Oliver's 3 speed shift on the go unit which bolted on to the clutch housing and was hooked to the tranny via a chain coupler. An excellent reliable setup which gave 18 speeds forward. The "hydrapower drive" was Oliver's two speed shift on the go unit which bolted to the clutch housing and was connected to the tranny via a chain coupler. This gave 12 speeds forward. Most of the 50 series (but not all) had the "hydrapower drive". As far as the lights go, the 55 series had two lights on the front grill in addition to (not instead of) of a light mounted in each fender.

I dont know an easy way to varify if it is a 283. But the 1655 vs. the 50 the 55 has a hydrodrive and 50 does not. Also the head lights are mounted in the grill instead of on the fenders. (its better in my openion dosent attract bugs as bad) The 1650 and 55's were one of the best tractors Oliver ever made according to many on this site. I have 2 50's (I love!)and would like to have a 55. This was all I could come up with off the top of my head. There were some other diferences I think and if I rember I will post later. I hope to see some more posts from others but if the tractor is sound I think you will like it if you can get it. Good luck.

A truly great tractor. The 283 does share many parts with a 310 but there are clues one can get by looking at the inj. pump, front crank pulley, oil filtration and/or cooler assembly, etc. to differentiate them. It should be a 283 unless someone has experimented with repowering it. The Over/Under and Hydra-Power were optional on both the 1655 and later 1650s. There was also the possibility of the Creeper Drive or no auxiliary drive at all.
