70 Oliver Exhaust manifold/pipe question

I just bought a pretty good old 70 (about a 47-48....it has the aluminum metal). It has the exhaust coming out under the hood with no pipe or muffler on it. I want to route it out of the hood, but I don't understand something. The exhaust manifold has two outlets. One horizontal and one I (toward the rear) vertical. Exhaust gas does not come out of the rear one. Is there a valve on it that lets it come out of one hole or the other? How is it supposed to be piped out of the top of he hood? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I am new to the 70, but I love it already!

There should be a cast iron "elbow" bolted to the front manifold opening. A second combination blank-off plate and upward-facing elbow is bolted to the rear manifold opening. The muffler lies horizontally, above the manifold and between these two elbows. A short exhaust stack fits onto the rear elbow outlet and up through the hood.

In operation, exhaust flows from the manifold out thru the front elbow, on thru the muffler, then thru the rear elbow and up the stack.

----

FWIW guys pulling the 70 generally remove the elbows at both ends of the manifold and fit short stacks on both openings. This dual exhaust has gotta "breath" much better than the stock setup!

Originally , the muffler went under the hood , inbetween the two cast iron outlets , as you call them. Then out the hood in one pipe. A piece of pipe between the two cast iron elbows will work just fine. New manifolds are now being remanufactured for the oliver 70 tractors. Before that , people started putting two exaust pipes up through the hood. And to answer your question , there is no valve of any kind on that one cast iron elbow. It has a solid cast iron bottom. The only reason for this set-up was the muffler setting horizontal under the hood.
