I have an Oliver 1650 Gas. I am wondering how much gas usage is normal. This tractor really seems to suck a tank dry. I was plowing this fall with an Oliver 566 4-16 and used about 8 to 10 gallons per hour. Is this normal or is something causing me reduced fuel economy. Should probably go to a diesel, but this tractor is my favorite, pulls strong and runs good all the time.

Answer to Jonnnie T's question, The Oliver 1850 Gas tractor test is number 875. On the maximun PTO test, 92.43 HP @ 2400 RPM, it consumed 7.701 GPH. This would be a constant pull for one hour. On the Drawbar Test, @ 75% of load for one constant hour, it consumed 6.981 GPH. The 75% drawbar would be more like the use you would have in the field as I am sure you are not pulling 100% all of the time and are turning at the ends also.

Adam - Your fuel consumption sounds too high to me too. Our 1650 gas burns 6 - 7 gallons/hr pulling a 5x14 plow in 3rd direct.

Make sure the ignition timing is set to spec, and that both the centrifugal and vacuum spark advance mechanisms are working. Then try leaning the carb high speed mixture screw to where the engine begins to lose power, then opening it back up 1/8 to 1/4 turn.

Good luck - the 1650 is one of my favorite tractors too!

Our 1850 gas will consume 7-1/2 - 8 gallons/hour pulling a 6x16 plow in 3rd under/2nd direct. This is in gravelly soil in cold upstate NY.

Wow Bob, 5-14 in 3rd direct. I can't pull my 4-16 in more than 2nd direct or the tractor lugs down way too much. What kind of soil you have where you are. Mine is dark black topsoil, not heavy clay or anything like that. I don't know, maybe I'm plowing too deep, how deep do you run.

Adam - We're plowing mostly glacial moraine - sandy, gravelly stuff that plows easy. However on the river bottom (clay/muck) we gotta drop to 3 under or 2 direct.

Incidentally operating in the lower gears without an extra 500# hung on the front end it's difficult to keep the front wheels on the ground.
