I have and oliver 1650 gas that won't start since it got really cold here. About zero at night. Tractor sits outside. I have the coolant heater on and it's working. I just put a new battery in it today and it turn over very slow a few times and then not at all. I tried jumping it with my truck and get the same results. I checked the oil, it's not stiff from the cold, running 5w-30. Any ideas out there. Going to check the battery cables tonight, maybe too much resistance. Weak Ground? Or just bad starter?

Clean all your battery connections, including both ends of the ground.

Focus on your cables first and then look at your starter. The cables if original are at least 30 years old and do degrade after time. Do you have a 12V battery or the original dual 6V set-up? The starter could also be weak and this will in turn put a greater draw on the batteries and cables. You should have at least 700 cold cranking amps for any HD type battery installation.

Dave I have a single twelve volt on the tractor. I checked the cables today and they seem fine. I couldn't get an ohm reading on them but I checked voltage at the starter solenoid and had the same as at the battery. I bought this tractor about a year ago and I don't think the cables are that old. The rubber isn't cracked and they are 1awg cables. Should I go heavier with them. Ordered a new starter today. Here tomorrow so I'll see if that works. Adam

A gas 1650 shouldn't take that big of a battery to turn it over fast enough to start. My brother just has a little $30 Wal-mart special on his 1650 and it starts all the time in cold weather.

I suspect that if your battery cables look good, that you have a bad starter. Take the starter off and take it to your nearest automotive electrical shop and have them load test it for amperage draw. Then you will know for sure what you have. Most will test it for free or for a nominal charge.

Take CFB advise and pull the starter and have it tested. My bet is that it needs a rebuild. The starters are a very common unit, the last time I had one rebuilt it was about $150. For comparison, my 770 gas starts at -30 with a new battery without being plugged in. If the tractor is in the open a blanket will help keep the engine much warmer.

Put a new starter in today. Replaced the plugs and shot a little either in her. She fired right up, cranks over much faster now. Runs now like she always did.

Yup!! our 1600 would start in the coldest of day, even with the old worn out engine that couldn't pull itself. We had the starter rebuilt before it quit running, and it only cost about $60 which was about 6-7 years ago. To keep that in retrospect the generator cost $40 for a rebuild about 6 months ago and a different rebuilt one for our Massey 165(tach drive on the back) from the same place was $120. I started the 1600 a few weeks ago but it didn't seem to turn over as fast as it should have... I think I just need to clean off the ground contact a little bit where the cable is bolted to the tractor.

Get a good battery, one with a lot of cold cranking amps. Use real heavy battery cables, and that will insure cranking power. If it sits outside, you might consider throwing a blanket over the engine. I've never done it, but hear that if its windy, you can loose heat as fast as the coolant heater makes it. A tune-up and carb adjustment won't hurt either. With a good running tractor, good battery cables, and a good battery, it should start at 0 with out being plugged in.
