I have a 1650 gas and would like to check the timing. I know you have to remove the timing hole cover but I don't know where this is. Any help would be great. Hopefully this helps with my high fuel consumption. Also my spark plugs after only a few hours of running are black, not wet and oily just black. Am I running rich and how do I fix this.

Adam,

A little more info: If using a timing light, set timing at 22 degrees BTDC @ 2200 RPM with vacuum line disconnected and plugged. Point gap for the Holley dist. is .025

If running rich, check the air filter and also check the intake piping for restrictions before adjusting the carb. The tips of the plugs should be light tan in color after the tractor has been run under a load for a while. Our 1650G likes the fuel when working hard (mowing with a Discbine) but is not bad when using the loader, etc. on light work. Our 1650 is a favorite around here. My wife even uses it for bucketing mulch around the yard for her flower beds!

Good luck,
Scott

Do you still have a distrihbutor with th vacuum advance? If so you much unhook the line and plug it at the manifold when timing the engine. Questions?

I have the distributor with the vacuum advance. I know you have to disconnect that and plug it to time it. Just didn't know where the timing hole was on the tractor.

Timing cover is on the left side of at the back of the engine on the bell housing if your sitting on the tractor. Does it start ok or do you have trouble with it? I would check the carb and clean and adjust it and see if that helps. Sounds like it is running rich through there.

Tractor starts fine. I just was told that I should check the timing in relation to my excessive gas consumption.

Well it won't hurt anything and might as well check it, I usually do on the ones we buy more out of curiousity than anything. When ours do that we usually have to either clean the carb or change a float in it. Let us know whatyou find out :)
