I am trying to time my 1650 gas. Opened up the timing hole cover and found a pointer inside. When I run the engine and check with timing light, I lined up the pointer with a scribed line on the flywheel. Is this how I set it at 22 BTDC or do I need to do something else. Also, I know the firing order on these tractors is 15 36 24 but which cylinder is #1. Are the cylinders numbered from radiator end to flywheel or flywheel to front. Thanks for the help.

I was reading this and I am wondering about some of your concerns. It is a little like Don said but when the engine was new #1 cylinder on the distributor cap would be about at the 1:30 position Questions send me a phone number> Merry Christmas.

You are doing it correctly. The cylinders start at #1 at the radiator and go back from there.

What is causing me trouble with this is that I replaced the distributor cap with a new one and it is numbered 15 36 24 just like the old one. The problem is that it seems to be reversed 180 degrees. for example the #1 terminal goes to #6 cylinder and so on. The tractor runs fine and when I look in the book the wires go where they show they should be, just doesn't correspond with the numbering of the cap. Has anyone else had this problem, I'm thinking the cap is being numbered wrong at the factory. ????

Has the engine ever been apart? Im guesing the distributer isn't timed to the engine right. This happens because the oil pump isn't lined up right on the cam shaft so the distributer isn't where it should be any more. I have the same thing with my 1600. The distributer doesn't line up where it technically should. Won't hurt anything, just have to remember this when doing a tune-up.

Don so what you are saying is that the distributor itself is probably 180 degrees off. Am I correct. The only problem is that there is a tang on the distributor housing that allows the cap to only be put on one way, would this be on the other side if the distributor was assembled correctly. If this was on the other side the cap would sit properly on the dist. so the #1 terminal would be where it should be.

More or less. The distributer shaft will only go into the engine one way because the drive tang is off center. If the oil pump wasn't timed right, the shaft will be in the wrong spot for #1 TDC, although the distributer itself will be in the "correct" spot. On my engine I put a mark on the engine and distributer before I took it out for a rebuild, and now they don't line up because I didn't think of the timing issue with the oil pump.(had someone else put it together) With this in mind, the oil pump could have been put in and timed 180 off, so now the distributor shaft is also 180 off. If you turn the distributor around 180(don't know if you can on the 1650 or not) you would be able to use the correct marks on the cap.

My 1600 doesn't have the numbers on the cap so for me it isn't a very big deal.
