I pulled the thermostat housing off my 1650 today to investigate my cooling problem. Tractor does not heat up to operating temp. Found no thermostat in tractor. I had a new one and a gasket on hand. Put all back together and I have a leak on the right rear bolt, if you were sitting on the tractor. I noticed the new gasket had a rather large hole here, about 3/4" instead of 3/8" or so for the other bolts. This is right where my leak is coming from. Can I use silicone to seal this up or is there something better to use. And why is this large hole in the gasket?

Adam,

Are you sure that you have your thermostat seated correctly in the housing? If its tilted a little bit it might not be allowing the gasket to seal properly. As long as there's a complete loop of gasket material around the entire outside edge of the thermostat housing, the size of the bolt hole should not matter.
Also, never use silicone when you have a gasket, it will cause leaks, not stop them. Silicone is designed to be used where there is no gasket available. If you need to use something to hold the gasket in place for installation, use weatherstrip cement or something similar.

Does anyone else with a 1650 gas know why there is a 3/8" bolt under the thermostat housing, sort of in the way of the thermostat, just that it fits over it? I also noticed that the thermostat sits way off center in the bottom hole where it goes into, fits nicely into the top of the housing, is this normal?

The gasket is probably a "fit-all" and works on more than just your application. I would try another source to see if you can get one with a smaller hole. If not, you can make your own with some gasket material. One brand I have used is "Ferrapac" that I think is made by TRW, not exactly sure though. I really try not to use silicone or any other gasket sealer unless it is a necessity and I will admit that sometimes it is. Good luck.
