The year was 1967 at the Farm Progress show. Dad said there were 770 Oliver tractors everywhere. Most any vendor that needed a tractor for demonstration purposes was using a 770. The tractors used to carry the showgoers from the parking lots to the show were 770's. The tractors used to transport people on the wagon trailers around the show were 770's. Dad was intrigued by this and thought the late model styling (flat top fenders, checkerboard grill, tapered name plate) was really fancy. Dad said this was the last year of production for the 770 and in his opinion Oliver had brought a bunch to the show as a loan/donation/write-off and probably later sold them for a demonstrator/reduced rate since they were being discontinued anyhow. Dad said he didn't think seriously about buying one at the time as his operation didn't need another tractor of that small size at the time. Yet he always wanted one. Fast forward almost 40 years to 2005. We have a vacation cabin in the U.P. of Michigan. (We live in Southern Indiana) One of our neighbors at the cabin (who lives full time near Detroit) Dad had mentioned to him that he always wanted a 770 with the flat top fenders. Well, the phone rang the other day and the friend from Detroit says his local dealer just had a nice 770 with flat top fenders that he had traded for. So Dad calls the dealer and settled on a price sight unseen on a 1967 model. Next week Dad is driving the 400+ miles to bring the 770 home. He will finally get one of them fancy 770's on his farm. Odds are it probably isn't one that was at the farm progress show in 1967, but then again it might have been.
