Just looked at a 1950 T today. Tractor is in excellent shape. Has Hydraul shift, over/under. Good clean diesel tractor. The seller is asking $5900. Just wondering if this is a good tractor, any major things to look for. And what does the T mean after the 1950. Never seen that before.

Oliver built a model 1950 that had a 4 cylinder GM diesel engine. The 1950-T came out in 1967 (I think) and it had the 6 cylinder 310 Oliver (Waukesha) engine. The GM version was phased out some time later. The 1950-T was the first Oliver with a factory turbo and offered the over/under as standard equipment instead of the hydra-power. My dad and grandad had two of these at one time. Pulled a 5-18" White plow, 18ft Oliver disks, 21ft Kewannee field cultivator, and 9 shank mounted chisel plow with them. They were good horsepower. One of them eventually started getting water in the oil. One was eventually traded for a 2-135 White and the other for a 2-105.

When the 1950-T was introduced the over/under was not available yet. The first say 6 months of production the hydra-power was the drive. Questions?

Every time I think I know something someone proves me wrong again. Just going by the advertising literature I've seen. It all says the over/under was new and was standard equipment for the 1950-T. I am sure you know more than I do since you were there and I was not.

Adam,
A 1950T was my main tractor in the early 70's. I don't recall the year but it was a late model with a straight six trans, no over/under. With the fender tanks I could plow with 4-20's for about 24-26 hrs. The only problem I ever had was the teeth stripped off the hyd. pump. No one could figure out why. That was one of the best tractors to operate I ever ran. Always seemed very nimble for the size. Larry Coltrin

A 1950-T is good on fuel. Since it has the over/under it is not a real early one. If it has only one air cleaner it would be a very late one. There are a lot of other options, such as what size tires, fuel tak fenders, If it does not have this fuel capacity is limited, cat 3 three point, front wheel assist, even if it has a PTO, etc This to me would affect the price also. There are only about 2, maybe three left around here. Also around here they are too big for a handy chore tractor and too small for a tillage tractor and for some too small to plant with. I think here that would be high on value, but if it was ona an auction it might bring more, but the buyers would not be local. Around here it depends on how close the supporting dealer is.

T stands for turbocharged. Check to see if it has the newer 12-point rod bolts or the old style 6-point. You can look through the oil fill tube with a flashlight and should be able to tell. There is a lot of little stuff that can hide well on these tractors. I gave $6000 for a 1955 that looked real good. $3000 worth of parts and many hours of labor later and I have a tractor that still has a lot of problems but is useable. I am hoping mine makes it through this next hay season then next winter it is gonna need some major work. If I had it to do over, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have bought it. If I could get my original $6000 back I'd probably sell it, if my wife would let me, she likes that stupid thing for some reason?
