Has any one rebuilt a 3208? is it a expensive engine to rebuild? The engine in the 4-150 turned out to be no good. Any good sorce for parts or a used engine?

Hey Adam, It sounds like your engine is just wore out. Pull the crankcase ventilator cover off and see how much blow-by you have, run a compression check, or pull a head off and see the wear in the cylinders.

Other than the time it takes, overhauling it wouldn't be that bad Bore the block, put in oversize pistons, replace the brgs and do the heads, pretty straight forward.

Those engines got named "throw away" because they don't have sleeves and many thought once the cyl are wore you just throw it away because you can't replace the sleeves. Cat makes several different oversize pistons and even says that you can bore just one cyl.

What kind of load are you putting on that 4-150? Good luck, WB.

The best source for a 3208 is a truck salvage. They used to put them in thousands of trucks. Ford and Chevy, lots of other applications over the years. I think even some of those big three wheeled fertilizer trucks have them in them too. The trucks are usually about 210 hp versions. My dealer in Michigan used to pick up the engines from Weller Truck Parts in Grand Rapids Michigan. They used to get a lot of fleet type trucks in that were either smashed or taken out of service and he used a lot of them in the Whites and Olivers. You could give them a call. I would think $2500 for a good running engine would be a fair deal from worthingtons. Our neighbor repowered his 4-210 with a new holland combine motor. Last I saw it was towing a 8 bottom plow with no problem. Don't let it get to you. It can be fixed and don't let anybody talk you into buying a $50,000 dollar tractor and going in debt for it. The newer one will lose more value in the first ten minutes you drive it than the 4-150 ever will again. New tractors get old too and when the electronics start messing up on them, (which it will) it costs a bundle to fix them. And when they are 30 years old they will be sitting out in the barnyard next to the 4-150 with a blown up cummings! Good luck.

Poor luck struck again, Adam? I dont want to sound like a broken record on you, but I'd say cut the losses and get a late model White and make some payments. Our 145 is unreal- it wont compair to any of these old 3208's.....

Easy there J. I know your proud as a peacock of the 145 but don't dig on the guys tractor. He's doing what he can do. Your 145 won't compare to alot of newer tractors either but I don't think that is the point here.

That's good to hear J. I thought it might be a little ribbing between friends. You're both from Minnesota right? It just struck a nerve with me cause I've been surrounded by die hard John Deere neighbors and friends my whole life and I've always had to listen to them gloat. According to them, John Deere's never tear up. LOL.

You are correct- we are both from Minnesota. As for the Deere gloating...I know it all too well. I actually work for Deere and there are plenty of times you get it at work. I got a co-worker though that has sold Deere for almost 40 years and he has nothing but respect for Oliver and White. Funny how that goes somedays:)

Adam,

3208s are certainly plentiful. You could check Worthington or a host of other salvage yards for combine engines or even good engines in White or MF tractors in which the 3208s were used. You might also check the Cat dealer; they would probably have a good supply of parts engines. The engines they pull out are in all likelihood in as bad or worse shape than yours. I have not rebuilt one, but as with any motor overhaul, with the right reference materials, you should be able to do a fine job. Cat dealer can get you parts, overhaul kits, etc. I have even priced a complete Cat reman 3208 and they are pretty reasonable. With a good core, ballpark $7500 - $8000. By the time you factor in your time, that isn't too bad. But then a guy has to ask himself, is the tractor you're putting it into worth it? I got lucky with the 4-210; it has a healthy 3208. The 2255 has one that is getting tired, but it will still develop incredible power.

Worthington gets $2,500 for a used engine with a 30 day warranty. I'm not likely to do that. I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this engine's troubles. Runs good under no or little load but put a load on it and things go south fast. Lots of heat, smoke and no power. No knocks rattles or other abnormal noise.

This sounds to simple but it almost sounds like it has dirty air filters. I spent about an hour blowing the dust from mine last year. The inside one looked pretty good but the ouside one was very dusty. I remember having a 4-180 that the filters got dirty and knowbody could figure out why it was struggling trying to pull the field cultivator up some hilly ground. It turned out to be dirty filters. Just an Idea. Good luck.

Check the injection pump timing, and the operation of the injection pump advance mechanism.

This is set up on the camshaft gear or the injection pump drive gear, it's been a while, and I can't recall exactly how it is set up. I have CAT from a 1500 or 1800 Massey that I was always going to tear into, and never seem to get around to it! There used to be a few of those around here, as well as the 4-150's.

I have heard that these are throw-away motors when tired because of the way the engine was made. Too bad because they have good power. My brother has 2 of these motors in trucks and one started getting water in the base. He bought another junk truck with good motor rather than fix bad one.
