I have a 1650 gas. Is this tractor large enough, horsepower wise to chop corn with a 2 row head. I have a GEHL 400 chopper and currently chop with a 1 row head. How much horsepower is needed to run a two row head? Thanks for the advice.

One year the water pump went out of our 970 Case so we chopped with the 1850dsl. until we blew a tire, put the 1650dsl. on the cutter, kept going but didn't get alot done. If low on power 1 row works fine as ground speed regulates output

You could do it in sweet corn, but in good feild corn I don't think you'd have near enough oomph. With our 1855 and Fox 3000 (105 on the dyno) we can go in 2nd/3rd gear. Sometimes it'll grow over the top of the wagon, then it's down to 1st maybe 2nd under. Used to use our Massey 285 (about 85) on the 1 row Fox we have, and that was a struggle at times.

What gear do you use now? You would be stuffing twice as much corn in the throat of the chopper, so you have to basically go 1/2 speed, maybe a little bit more. I can't imagine you go any faster than 2nd right now, but it depends on how tall the corn is and your growing season. I don't think it would work very good at all, definately not in our corn.

Oh by the way. I live very near you, just south of Chilton. You are in the fox cities right.

I thought you were close to me but I couldn't remember. You happen to know when the Chilton tractor show is this year? I'd like to try and get my 1600 there if I can.

Yeah, I'm just south of Kaukauna, straight west of WIR on 55. Donovan from Wisconsin

Sounds right, it seems we're always in the middle of chopping bedding during the show. The fair is the last week or close to it right? I may try and enter the pull too.

Thanks Don, always good advice. I don't remember what gear I ran in last year, probably 2nd maybe third under. I thought I didn't have enough horsepower but just thought I'd ask. Last year my corn was planted on 36" rows but with poor plant spacing, about 2 inches. My planter wasn't set-up right. My thinking was that since I had better than double the corn plants that I should have had, 2" spacing versus 6" spacing this year, this would be about equivalent to chopping 2 rows at a time. Maybe just trying to make sense of all this, not sure if I'm correct or not. Any response would be appreciated.

This is just for grins. The only 1650 I ever converted to dual speed PTO was so he could pull an Oliver 830 Chopper that had been a demonstrator at th Farm Science Review. He used a 2 row Fox head. We also had a man that had a 570 Cockshutt gas with a 2 row Fox behind it. You need to remember 40 years ago corn yields were not like they are now. Just to show how time changes things.

I'm only 21 so I can't remember the good 'ol days, but I'd believe it. We've been planting Mycogen the last few years and that stuff is NUTS!! We ussually run short by about 1/2 bag of seed each year (go figure) so we plant some other seed we've had laying around for a few years. It's got a shorter maturity date but it only gets about 5-6' tall vs. 8-10' tall. Looks kinda funny when we have 1/2 the planter with one seed and the other side has the old seed, so in the feild you get 4 tall rows, then 4 short and it keeps going like that... Gotta shift gears a little more then too.

Just today I cut one hay feild we are gonna bale then plow under for corn, put the 16 on the haybine because it was more conveinient than unhooking the other tractor...

Thanks for the reply. You mentioned that you converted a 1650 to dual speed pto, I thought mine already had this on it. Am I wrong or did some not have the dual speed pto unit on them?
