Obviously i have an 8n, but i am looking for a slightly heavier tractor and definitly diesel. Just curious if the 55 diesel or the 550 diesel were considered good Olivers. They seem to be around the right size.

Also what would be a good price for an un-restored model, and how rare were they?

I have to admit, i am really liking this shade of green, and surely it is cheaper.

Hello, I currently own a 550 Gas with loader. Previously owner a 8n with loader. The Oliver has more power and is a bit heavier. As you said, parts were ridiculously easy to get for the ford, which was always nice. Oliver parts are not too hard too find, my local AGCO dealer has had what I needed. However, they are about twice as expensive as a comparable 8N part. When I was looking I was also strongly considering a Massey Ferguson 135. I just happened to find a nice 550 first. They are similar in size, weight and power. However, the 550 does have the best power to weight ratio. Also check out Shep's article, very helpful.

When you say "compared to an 8n their no comparison" what do you mean by that. They are much better? Or just more powerful? Are parts hard to come by for Oliver's? I know that fords are ridiculously easy to get, cheap too.

Much better because of more power (in the same size tractor- Olivers and 8N's even use the same steering arms and other steering parts). Also, independent PTO, which is better than live PTO(IMHO), and worlds better than transmission driven (also known as "dead"- which 8N has). Also, live hydraulics and possibility of remote hydraulic as well. For just driving around with the grandkids on your lap, the 8N's have no peer- but if you actually want to do some work, go with the Oliver. I first drove one in 1964, have owned one since 1978, and it will be in my estate sale. Which I hope will be several years down the road.

You will most likely find Ford parts easier to get, but the only part I had a hard time finding for my Super 55 was a thrust bearing for the pinion gear shaft. There are a lot of after market stuff, and AGCO still has lots of parts. I have a diesel Super 55, they are more rare than the gas. I don't know about the 550s. Power steering is hard to find on the Super 55, so I wouldn't consider it if you are going to do a lot of work with a loader. I think there are many more 550s with the power steering. What part of the country are you located. That makes finding certain models harder too.
