Powershift freewheel?

Hello,

Has anyone figured out how to keep the oliver/white powershift from freewheeling in low range. That is the main thing I don't like about it. I would be willing to pay good money to have mine modified. I have never been inside one, so I have no idea how they work. Does any one have a picture or diagram of one so I can better under stand the white/oliver over and under. Does it use clutchs like the farmall t/a???

One nice thing about the under is it always easy to get out of gear in under. We have a 4-wheel drive tractor that does not coast in un der and it can be quite difficult som etimes to get outm of gear.

I believe there were a few over/under units built and sold that had a second over running clutch that would prevent the tractor from freewheeling faster than when it was in overdrive. In certain situations such as when you drove up tight against a barn, you couldn't move the tractor. So this feature was removed. For quite some time after, the cavity for this second over running clutch was kept, but was finally removed. The White 100 series tractors all freewheeled when in low range or underdrive.
The White 100 and 120 were equipped with what we called the regular over/under. The White 140 had what we called the super over/under, and the White 160 and 185 had what we called the heavy duty over/under (same over/under that was in the 4-225). In all units, the over running clutch (sprag clutch) drove in underdrive, a hydraulic clutch drove in direct drive, and another hydraulic clutch locked up for overdrive. Hope this helps somewhat to explain how they work. The article in the magazine is a good one.

HyrdraPower drive is like Farmall TA & MF Multi-Power, they all freewheel when engaged on downhill. You learn to work around it, i.e. down shift, or throttle back

I agree, it can be a major pain especially when pulling a baler up and down hills. However, I would much rather have the extra gear that freewheels instead of no extra gear at all.

When you dig into the design, in order to create a simple and robust power shift, Oliver needed to implement a sprag clutch.

What I would like to find out is if the three speed in the 100 series (100, 120, 140, etc.) freewheels as well in low.

I think its just "the nature of the beast"- If you could make it stop freewheeling, it wouldn't work.

There is a very good article on the over/under powershift in the July/August issue of Hart Parr Oliver Colector. A nice feature on the 2255 in that issue also.

Nope, nevere heard of anyway to modify it. But on the other hand, it's just like the multi-power in Massey's.
