serial # tags, disc brakes, fleetlines

As I understand from a post below, if the serial number tag is on the dash, it is presumed the tractor is a 1952 year or newer. If the serial number tag is on the frame it is a 1952 year or older. The summer/fall of 1952 is when the change took place. This info is really interesting.

When did the tractors with disc brakes come into production? About this same time frame? Can you use similar logic about a tractor with disc brakes?

Does the size of the brake pedal have anything to do with band or disc brakes? My Dad bought a new 88 in 1950, had band brakes, stuck and grabbed a lot, the dealer replaced them with disc brakes and it seems like the pedals were larger when it came back from dealer. I might be wrong as that was only 50 plus years ago. Tractor has since gone to great tractor park in the sky. I have a 77D Super and the pedals are larger but I"m remembering the larger pedal on the old 88.

I'd have to go back into one of the old issues of OH or hpoca to tell for sure, and I'm not embarased to say I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure all of the late fleetlines had disc brakes and that the 88s were the first to come out with them,77s and 66s were changed shortly thereafter. If anybody has gone back and looked it up,feel free to ad to or correct me. About the time though that they went to cast front wheels, except the 66 which always had pressed steel fronts.

If you find it let me know. I do have the bulletin that tells when they changed. But that does not agree with the wheel thing at all.. J.

my understanding is the tag on diff. housing is a regulal row crop. on the dash was a super. disc brakes also means a super. there are some disc brake conversions out there also.

Well you are not wrong on the one statement but also a long way from being correct. What did you mean by disk brake conversions?

i have a 66 that has disc brakes. the spline for the disc bolts to the shaft just like the brake drum does. it is also a larger spline than my super 66 has. the disc is the same size on the outside. and the housing, actuator, and covers are the same as my super.

That is a Charles City conversion. Those tractors are covered under the bulletin I was talking about. We also had a 66 diesel around there that had a single front wheel for cultivating narrow row beans and it had the serial number on the dash (52) but did not have the disk brakes yet. More next week when I get back home. J.

I'm talking fleetlines only here. Tags on the dash started in 1952. Supers didn't come out until 1954.

I was just wondering if I look at a tractor what I can do to automatically tell it's time period. Supers are easily identifiable by the flat front frame. I also know the different color schemes and key versus foot start.

If I see a fleetline with a tag on the dash I know it's a 52 or newer. I thought if the same tractor had disc brakes I could say it's a 1953 or newer(example).

You were talking about the flat frames on the supers you cant just go by that ether I went to two auctions that had a S88 with a old 88 rear end (flat fraim and band brakes) and the other on was a 88 with a flat fraim ( old 88 that some one put a super frame under for sone reason)

Can't say much on this but my 1950 77 doesn't have disc but my 1953 does so it had to be some time in that area that the change was made
