I have a cletrac crawler and am unable to find any information reguarding the s/n of the engine, the # on it is 1264048. Supposed to be a 1942. Any Ideas.
Thanks, Matt

Could the number actually be L264048 rather than 1264048? The tag is ther and in good condition but you know how hand stamps can be. I haven't checked the block. Tag also reads in the upper rt. side " 3-14 X 4 " (bore and stroke)? I am as confused as you are.
Thanks, Matt

You have me confused. The engine serial number was on a stamped tag which probably is long gone. The engine serial number is also stamped into the engine block on the left side. Now Hercules assigned different blocks of serial numbers for the engines at different times. In case you have not decoded the complete number IX is the basic engine K is the bore designator which is 3.125 and 3 is for an engine with 3 timing gears. Engines with 5 timing gears were also built. The engine was also available in at least 3 other bores sizes as well as with a "stroker" crank in which case the letter L will be present in the serial number. That information as what group of serial numbers were used in what time period I don't have stored in my head. Your turn.J.
