I have noticed in some pictures of 50 series tractors that the wide front is under the tractor and on others like my 1650 the axle is in front of the tractor. What is the difference with these? Can you move the axle to either position? What is the advantage of either?

There is a third front axle also that is located in between the other two. I saw one for the first time a couple of years ago. I looked in the 1655 parts book and there it was; never noticed it before. A guy in Charles City has two 1600's with this in between front axle.

The tucked underneath one was known as the utility front axle. It was great for all these odd shaped fields and all the vegtable growers around here. Like Larry said when the regular front end was redesigned sales of the utility front axle for us dropped way off.

They have differant axels. The tucked or short ones ride rougher and steal some weight from the rear axel. They are nice if your useing one in the woods or in a tight spot. I belive at first they were supposed to turn shorter than the old 50 series axel. When the newer outfront axel came out it turned just as short or shorter so there was no big need for the tuck axel.

My 1850 is the utility version. With front weights and loaded front tires it doesn't ride too badly.
