Got the steering conversion done today and it turned out pretty good.

I used 4 straps on the motor instead of two and used some washers to hold it tight.

Here is the steering motor I used. It fit pretty good. If I do it again I will get a 2.5 inch stub shaft instead of a 3 inch one and I would try to get a motor that is a little faster.

I have a couple of questions for you. Why did you replace your steering unit? Whats the unit out off? How do these power steering systems work? When you turn the steering wheel does it pump fluid to the steering box to turn the tractor? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to educate myself so when mine dies I am ready.

Larry and some of the others know more about this conversion than I do, this was my first, but I will tell you what I have learned.

The Saganaw steering systems in the 50 series Olivers are known for leaking and bad steering. Since the company is long out of business the parts for these units are hard to find, and even if you do find the parts the unit is a bear to rebuild and does not hold up well once rebuilt.

So the modification to fix this is to put a new Char Lynn steering motor in instead. I got this one from Surplus Center. This is what Oliver used in the later 50 series and most of the 55 series tractors. Problem is trying to get all this behind the dash and still keep the tilt steering. So what I did is take the back off the old unit with the tilt part still on it, and modify some brackets to hold the new unit in its place. Not a bad conversion and I have a better steering unit.

You are correct, these units work kinda like a hydraulic cylinder, you turn to the left the fluid goes out of this steering motor and into the steering cylinder out front and moves the cylinder to steer the tractor. The steering motor has fluid running through all the time and only uses fluid when you move the steering wheel.

It is really neat how it all works, as long as it does not leak :-)

Here is what it looks like with the column and outside piece on it ready to go back in the tractor. I did end up drilling a hole and putting a spring pin in the column and I did not quite get it square and it has a little wobble in the steering wheel now, but not too bad.

It works pretty good, not as fast as the old saganaw unit, but very smooth, and no leaks.....

Thanks for all the help on this one guys...

Oh it may not be much slower, the oil was cold when I was playing with it. It takes 5 and a half turns of the wheel to go lock to lock, I thought the other one was faster than that, but maybe not.

I think it turned out pretty good. I better get my plans down on this one, I have two more saganaw units in tractors now, soooo one day.....

Thanks for all the help Larry.

The ones from the massy combines is about 3 turns the one from the road roller is 3 3/4 turns. The one my father bought new is 2 1/2 turns and it seemed really fast at first.

Wow, mine really is considerably slower then, I wonder why?? Its not a big deal just thought it would have been the same speed or faster..
