I am going to be looking at an 1850, not sure of the year. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for on this tractor. Any problems you guys know about that I should watch out for. I have a 1650 now. I am assuming most things are about the same, 1850 just a little bigger frame and bigger engine of course. By the way this tractor has the perkins diesel in it.

I've had mine since 1978 and it still runs strong and economical. Starts very good and I've got to agree with the rest of the posts about the brakes. One thing about it is that it's a little slow getting oil pressure. I'm not sure why or if anyone else is having this happen.

Adam,
I have the red version & I love it. Like the others said the breaks are a little weak, I think mine could be improved with a little work. It is a lot more tractor than my 1650, but they each serve there purpose.

We've had one for a lot of years,it's still the one we use the most. Yes,the brakes can be a little weak. I'be found that if you take the cover off now and then and blow out the brake dust it helps a lot. There really isn't anything in particular that was weak. The real beauty of the 354 Perkins was that there are so many in the bone yards in wrecked combines with only a few thousand hours. Ours needed an overhaul 2 years ago. I went to Worthington 40 miles away, bought one out of an 8900 White with 2000 hours for a little bit of nothing, injector pump and all. They don't have glow plugs by the way. There is a heating coil in the intake. Either it works or it doesn't. Seriously, they are a great tractor all the way around.

I've heard they've had problems with the brakes not being enough, which is probably why they switched to Hyd. brakes for the 55 series. Now is a good time to see how it starts in the cold without anything but the glow plugs.

I'd make sure the headlights work, or if they don't that it's something simple. I find if they can't do maintnance on a tractor, headlights are one of the first things to go. If the headlights are good, and it looks good, give it a good once over and see what you can get it for...

Better to have the later one with the 3 spd hyda over under. You'll like it a lot better than the 1650. We've had both over the years. still got the 1850 and use it about every day. aLL 1850's had perkins. Good motor. Brakes dont work the best stand on em hard they hold. They'll run a long time.good luck

Not all 1850's had the Perkins, only the deisels. Gassers were still powered with a Waukesha.
