I have a 77 the shaft leaving the bellhousing there is play in that shaft. I do not have a side pto, i have looked at several other olivers and they all where tight (solid)

could any one point me in the right direction on where this play is coming from?
is it from the clutch? spline worn? bushing worn in the retainer (where the pto would reside?)

thanks for the help!
Charlie

That drive shaft is hollow. It sounds like you have two problems,it has a brass pilot bushing in a hub in the flywheel, there is no way to lube them so it isn't uncommon for them to wear out.also the rear coupler must be a little loose on the splines if it has much slop to it. Those bushings aren't too hard to change. You have to pull the PTO shaft out, unbolt the 4 motor mount bolts and slide the engine ahead just a little to get the bellhousing off then remover the pressure plate. It will usually make a squeeling or grinding noise when you hold the clutch pedal down when those are bad.

I think that is my problem I need the brass bushing as it does make a noise when you hold the pedal down.
Thanks for the help
Andy
