Heat deflector/Fuel boiling?

I have a 1952 77 Oliver gas and I've found that previous owner had put in a piece of insulation type board between engine and gas tank. I have read where the four digit tractors have had some problems with fuel boiling but didn't know this issue existed with fleetlines. I haven't run the tractor in the summer yet to find out if this "deflector" is necessary. Anybody else know about this. Previous owner has passed away or I would ask him about it. Tractor is complete with all side shields.

When we had a mounted corn picker on a farmall 400 we could boil the gas. It come out the vent in the gas cap. Got so bad at noon one day it would not idle down so we put metal ahead of gas tank than cut a slot on each side of the hood to give the hot air a place to go. I think that tractor ended up in Wisc. about 1985 or 6. Wish I had it back but don't know s.n. At time it had an ITCO 3PT hitch. Armand

Hi Armand, When I clean out the cattle yard in the spring I can boil the gas in my 88 on a warm day and that's with the engine panels off. I have put one of those IHC safty caps on the tank because it would force gas out otherwise. These are very good caps. When you stop to come in for lunch, the vapors are rushing out of those two holes like a volcano, would hate to think what might happen if it ever iginited!

We ran mounted pickers on 77s and 88s without any problem, but getting back to the original question.I read ONE time about having to rerout the gas line on a fleetline because it was vaporlocking but never heard of any other case of it.Maybe somebody else would know why that insulation would be there. I've never seen any need for it.
