Well, I'm past the giddy stage of a new tractor aquistion and it is now time to see how much TLC this old girl will require.

Fluids:
I pulled the plugs on the drifferentail/transmission and found 1.5 gallons of water (not milky oil - H2O) and a quart of sludge.

The manual calls for SAE 40 in the diff/trans - Is there a better choice 50+ years later?

Engine Oil: Same question, manual calls for SAE 30, anything better to use today?

Speaking of Engine Oil: Anyone have a Oil Filter brand/number that works?

Speaking of brand/part numbers: Anyone have a suggestted spark plug?

Final Drives: Manual calls for SAE 40. Oil of choice in 2007?

Lastly, does a guy need to watch out for detergent vs. non-detergent oils in any of these applications?

The SAE 40 viscosity figure they are giving you is an engine-oil visc. spec. - not transmission. 40 weight engine oil equals 85-90 weight transmission oil - they are the exactly the same viscosity. The main thing is not the detergency, it's the EP additives. The oil you put into the transaxle cannot have any EP additives - so you cannot use modern GL-5 type gear-oil. GL1 is fine if you can find it, but straight 40 weight engine oil is often the easiest to locate - and if you get non-detergent it usually won't have any EP additives - such as zinc or phosphorous. The problem with the EP addivies is - your 3 speed transaxle is made by Clark Co. - model A-30 and uses brake-bands for steering. They control the differential just like a wheel tractor with a left and right brake pedal. EP additives plug up the brake-bands something awful and then it won't steer. 30W engine oil is fine for the engine - HD or non-detergent - however . . . if the engine seems to be real dirty inside - and perhaps hadn't been used in the past with high-detergent oil, then you might be better off sticking with non-detergent. Otherwise, you're going to have sludge coming loose, inside the engine, for a long time. I suspect you're going to discover the crawler is too fast in 1st gear for pushing dirt very well - that's the problem with HGs and OC3s unless they have the optional auxillary transmission. If you put a aux. in it, it will run much better and the engine will last much longer - since you won't have to lug it and/or slip the clutch. Spark plugs for the Hercules IXB3 engine are - if they are 14MM - a Champion J6 or J8 works fine. If the larger 7/8" plugs, takes a Champion W14. Engine oil filter - NAPA 31102 or Wix 51102.

We run 15w-40 in all of our tractors engines, gas or deisel doesn't matter. I wouldn't be afraid to use detergent oil in a new to me older machine unless I know the other guy ran non-detergent, but then I have to ask why... Detergent oils keep the sludge in suspension till the next oil change, instead of settling out.

For spark plugs, stay away form champion. AC Delco and Autolites are both pretty good.

That's all I can help with, never been around a crawler

I get the oil filter for my 1951-HG42 from my local NAPA. I run 30w in the engine. If you need the oil filter #, let me know, I"ll go out to the barn and fetch.....

Darrin,

This what we run in our old Oliver & Cletrac crawlers:

Engine: Shell Rotella SAE 30

Trans/Diff: Castrol UTF - Universal Hydraulic Fluid

Finals: Castrol UTF

Reverser: (if equipped) 80-90 gear oil

If you have water in the trans., be sure the shifter boot is intact and in good shape.

If you need parts & advice, call Landis at Zimmerman's @ (717)738-2573

We have been using high detergent (Series 3) oils in all of our old iron for many years with no problems. If an engine in a new acquisition is really sludged up, we pull the pan and clean it and the pump pickup screen before putting it into service.

If you need plug & filter numbers, shoot me an email and I will get them to you.

Good luck,
Scott
