Well, this is a sad story. Last year when I was towing my 2255 using a pipe and chain (stupid, but it's done with now) the 2255 came up on me and the pipe struck the end of the dual speed rod that comes out of the PTO. From what I can tell, inside it looks like the shifting forks in the transmission.
To make a long story short, it looks like the rod was broken off where it comes out of the PTO housing. Broken so that I can not thread a bolt into it or otherwise get at it to move the shifting fork ahead or back to shift gears. So, I'm stuck in 540 for now, which I can live with for a bit.
Anyway, how much of a job is it to R&R the PTO guts? Since it's working fine I wonder if I can just leave the clutch pack alone or should I replace the disks? Haven't done one it would be new to me.
If I remember right I have to drain the rear end oil and will need at least the gasket between the rear and PTO castings.
Comments, corrections or suggestions?

Yes you will need to drain the rear end. The pto shaft will need to be removed (don't forget to remove the o-ring behind the plug). After removing the lower support, the drawbar can stay on the tractor. When removing the pto get a piece of pipe that fits over the pto output shaft to help guide unit out. Be carefull unit is about 150 pounds. The spring on the pto can be compressed without the special tool by using a large prybar under the drawbar. While unit is out my suggestion would be to replace every seal, o-ring, & quadring. I did not replace the clutch discs while rebuilding my 2255 because they looked new & I will rarely use the pto.Another good idea would be to inspect the bearings & replace the seals where the 3 point goes into the rear. The worst thing about my rebuild was the heavy parts & the mess. I can help with part numbers if needed. Hope this helps, Stu.
