S55 need more power - options?

I just got a 6" finish mower for my Super 55. I"m amazed by how much that mower will drag the motor down. It can barely run it. Deep grass - forget it. My 2-18 plow won"t slow the tractor down as much. I"ve checked the drag on the spindles, the blades are razor sharp, the gearbox turns freely, and the cut height is set at 4 inches. I"m having a hard time believing that it doesn"t have enough power, but what else can I do? Short of adding a turbo, is there anything I can do to increase power? I"m running in 2 or 3 gear. Mostly 2nd gear. Pretty slow. I lose about 400 rpm when mowing. Basically pull the throttle all the way in to 2000 rpm, and it"ll bog to about 1600. It"s obviously laboring very hard. Is the mower just too big? I"m having a hard time believing that, since Land pride rates the mower from 15-50 HP.
Suggestions?

I have the same mower. I use our Ford 3910 , 42 h.p., diesel to pull it.I have no problem.I mow in third gear to get the best cut. This is a heavy mower if you have a tired motor.

My super 55 has a later 550 diesel engine in it. It has the 3 3/4 bore pistons and sleeves. I can pull a 5 foot brush hog through weeds over the tractor and not bog it down alot in 2nd gear. I have plenty of power. Even 3rd gear does fine. Has the engine ever had anything done to it?

The stock gas Super 55 and early 550 (144 CID) had a smaller engine than later models, with PTO HP of 34.4. Later engines with the 155 CID engine had 41.4 PTO HP.

I believe that you can install the later larger bore kits in the S-55.

We have a 7' Woods finish mower that we run with our S-55 gas. The first time I used it, the tractor could barely pull it through 6" deep grass. I adjusted the deck to make sure it cut level, tuned the tractor (plugs, electronic ignition, new cap etc.), don't let the grass get so far ahead of me, and now can easily mow in 3rd gear.

You didn't say gas or deisel. If deisel, when's the lst time the fuel filter was changed? Could be clogged. Same goes for the sediment bowl/screen fuel line on a gasser. May be a small screen going into the carb too, right where the gas line connects.

seems to me you would want to do just the opposite. especially if lack of power is the problem. the more i think about it though, level is best, if you have problems or not. ???

i ran a woods 6 ft finish with my 74 550 gas with no problem. i think landpride is dreaming though if they think a 15hp-30hp could run it. sorry though, don't really have any suggestions other than turning your pump up or perhaps your engine is wore out.
