Can a 3 speed from a 4-150 be put in place of a 2 speed in a 4-180. What are the gear ratios for the 3 speed vs the 2 speed? The 2 speed gives me 4.7 and 5.7 mph what would a 3 speed be? Can the 3 speed take 210 engine hp? I really like the 4-180 but despite 30 hp less than the 4-180, my 2255 out works it due to more speed choices. I have to pull the engine to repair the clutch any way and have a good 3 speed from a 4-150 laying around if the switch would work. Thanks.

Adam:     To install a Over/Under Hydraul shift you will have to do a lot of work if it can be done.  The two speed unit that you now have is a three shaft unit where the O/U is a two shaft unit.  In other words, installing a O/U will give you 18 speeds in reverse and 6 forward.

You would have to move the ring gear to the oppsite side of the pinion shaft in both differentials, if it can be done.  I have seen a front differential in a 4-150 assembled incorrectly and the two ends of the tractor tried to go in opposite directions!

Hello, BA! Boy...I learn something new every day! I did not know that the ring and pinion gears were reversed from the 4-150 to the 4-180. I have worked on both of these tractors, but never had to repair a differential. I installed a Cummins 6BTA5.9 in a 4-150 back in 1993. It made a pretty nice tractor, with less vibration. I also know a farmer who re-powered a 4-180 with a Cummins. (By the way...I am a big fan of the Cat 3208, but the turbo versions tend to run smoother). Now I know more about the differences! Thanks!

Thanks for the info. That's way more project that I'm ever going to get done. How did the cummins fit the 4-150?? 8.3 or 5.9?
