White 2-70 Fuel Problem

I have a 2-70 diesel which is running pretty good, around 5,000 hours, but every once in a while it acts like it's starving for fuel. The engine starts to loose RPM's and there is no throttle response. This can happen with or without a load.

The first time I thought I was running out of fuel as the gauge was a little below 1/4. So I shut down, added 10 gal and it ran fine for several weeks. Then it happened again. I changed the filter and cleaned the bowl/screen and it seemed to run OK for a couple hours then acted up again. I shut it down, drained a little from the filter (no water present) and then it ran fine for 6 hours. I keep plenty of fuel in the tank.

I will keep running it but have a feeling it will happen again. Any ideas what the problem may be? I'm now thinking that just the act of shutting down and then restarting after 5-10 mins clears up the problem (for a while). Could some problem with the pump be causing this? Thanks.

The same thing happened to me with my 2-105 this year, mine would completley shut down and it all started once the tank got to 1/4 full. I called my dealer and he told me that it is sucking air some where and on the low pressure side the less fuel pressure in the tank at lower levels was making the fuel supply pump work harder and that is when air is coming in through a hole in the line or the fuel supply pump has a hole in the diaphram (spelling ?). So I went and bought a new supply pump for $50 and I have not had a problem since. He told me that the new low sulphur diesel fuels are hard on the rubber parts in the pump.

Our 1600 and 1550 did the same thing and ulimitly had to have the pump worked on. I am assuming it has the Roosamaster pump. On top of the pump there is a pressure regulator fitting that gets plugged up. Ours both were plugging with tiny shreds of rubber. Both needed to have the rubber driving ring inside the pump replaced. This happened on both tractors within weeks of each other. We think our fuel supplier started changing over to lower sulfer diesel was the cause of it. Our other roosamaster pumps which had fairely recent gone throughs were unaffected. As always rule out easier, cheaper fixes. Any good shop can handle this repair. If I remember correctly it was about $250 with new seals and gaskets.

remove the cap when it starts doing this. Could be the vent is plugged up and there is a vacume building in the tank.
