Cletrac AG6 - Battery question

I just bought a Cletrac AG6 - F226 with distributor - book says positive ground. Tractor is set up 8V battery and Negative ground with generator which may or may not be original. 8v battery is more or less dead - requires jump to start so I replaced with new 6v. It seems challenged in starting, though it will start. It also has a 12v fuel pump - not sure if it was fuel challenged - it seems to be, but that may be tank debris from transport - I have already changed aux in-line fuel filter that was black - not sure what to do. I"m thinking of just replacing with a known 12v generator & battery, but what is difference between + and - ground except for fuel pump? thanks - Ed

See discussion below on the 77 and the 8 volt. Do you have a volt meter? I also sent you an e-mail. J.

Ed,

I have an AG-6 , the original 6V starter will

turn that engine well if all the grounds and

other connections are cleaned and shined . If

it doesn't turn well ,you will need to take the

starter to an electrical shop and explain that

you have cleaned all the connections etc and it

is lacking in torque . I took mine to the shop

some years ago and explained the problem, his

answer was -that starter will turn any engine

that it was designed to bolt on , I will fix

it- . The cost was 16 dollars and it would

overrun the engine at idle . Not sure what he

did , but I think he adjusted the brush timing.

If your going to switch it to 12 volt, you will need to get a 12 volt coil. Hook it up neg ground. The + post on the coil will need to go to the ign switgh. The - post will need to go to the dist. I would put a ballast resistor in the coil wire between the coil and the dist. It saves on points If you have lights, you'll need 12 volt bulbs. I've done this a quite a few tractors and have never had a problem.
