Ok, rookie tractor driver here. I have a 1655 that I love. I was playing around with it today and wondered what the correct way to actually use the Over/Under was - is it correct to shift on the fly? Also, when should I be using over, under and direct drive - under what conditions?

I know this might sound like a stupid question but I'm trying to learn! Thanks!

You can shift on the fly, in any gear. We have almost 6000 hours on a White 170, which has the same design of tranny. A lot of it"s shifting was done when pulling loads in 6th gear. If you want to lightly clutch when in 5th or 6th, it"s not a bad idea, maybe for gentleness to the load. With experience, you know what engine RPM"s to shift up or down so it"s pretty gentle. When to use? The over drive is ~10% faster than direct, and the under is ~10% slower. So if you are pulling too hard, shift down.

Do use caution though. In underdrive, you can freewheel, meaning you lose the effect of engine braking. If you have a heavy load behind you, can get dangerous. Also, we find that shifting while stopped is easiest in direct, seems to take some pressure off the gears, allowing them to slide.

The above info is fine and dandy until you are in 5th or 6th and pulling a large load. If you want to take out the torque, wide open in the above gears will do take it out real slick. All other gears, you're not likely to hurt it, but in the higher ones, clutch it as you move from one position to the next.

Can't say we've had any problems with it in our 1855 and we never clutched to shift it. 1755 was fine too.

No clutching is necessary, we've never had problems in higher gears.

I will add my 2 cents here. Unlike the t/a in an international, if you want to plow in under all day then do it. Over, not a problem. All three speed are good for constant use. However, be aware that the tractor will freewheel in under drive. Hope this helps, Stu.

To be clear--the 1655 has the 3-speed auxillary transmission with direct, over, and under like the later 1650s (earlier were the 2-speed Hydra-Power drive with direct and under, no over). I would shift one range at a time as needed-over to direct; direct to under on the down shifts. Doesn't hurt anything to shift on the fly.

Yes you can shift on the fly. Let’s say if I'm plowing in 2 over then the ground get tough so I drop it down to 2 under that will give be more power. If you every used a TA on IH it is the same thing. Use it when you need more power that is what it is there for. Any time you feel the tractor struggle don’t be afraid to drop it in under. Then if you want to go faster shift it up to over.
