Hello,
I was asked to tune up a Leader Tractor. Which has a 4 cylinder Hercules engine in it. I was hoping someone here has a tune up book on it. I need the point gap and dwell as well as where you find the timing mark and how to read it. If there is a small mark on the casting,if you do this at idle or slightly higher and what the idle speed is supposed to be set at. Thanks in advance! Bryan

Welll, FWIW: My 1950 Motor Truck/Tractor Herc engine section (over-the-road dist-ign truck engines) shows points .020 and plugs .025 for every engine listed (does NOT include IXB"s, which many (all?) Leaders used...
BUT BF Avery "A" uses IXB3, and for dist ign shows plugs .025-.030, and points .020. Avery section tells how to time mag but not dist.
There"s also an Ignition section with a batch of dist specs; your local library should have a reference copy. Good luck.

It would help a lot if you told us which herc. engine it has and if its a mag or dist. Theres probably more then 100 different herc. engine that where made and they are not all the sake as far as the specs you want. If its an IXB3 with a mag the points are set at .015-.017 and then manual I have on the mag/timing takes up to 2 pages to explain it all which would take me way to much typing to post here

I should have thought of that, sorry. It has a distributor ignition. It has so much paint on it that I bet the id tag for the engine is hidden. The owner thinks it is an early 50's version. If the point gap and timing are common for the 4 cylinder I would appreciate that alone. Thanks for the reply.
Bryan

Well the books I have only give info for the mag type systems, not a dist. type system. But I would almost bet if you set the points at .020 you will be right in the ball park since that number is a very common point gap for a very larger number of engines for tractors, cars, and trucks.

0.20 for point gap and 2 degrees BTC for timing.
