I recently purchased an Avery Model V that I am restoring. I am a bit confused on the Make of it. I have seen conflicting posts on this subject in different forums. The tractor is a 1947 Model V (sn:1V-285). I know Avery was purchased by M-Moline in 1950 or 1951 and they built the Model V for a few more years but under the M-M name but I have seen Avery and BF Avery decals on tractors that look just like the 1947 model. Thanks

Albert Espe designed the first Avery smaller tractors (Model C)in 1912 (he had earlier designed and built the COD Tractors in Crookston Minnesota. The 1920 Model C with an Avery 6 cylinder engine was the first six ever tested by the University of Nebraska. In 1924, Avery filed bankruptcy and reorganized in that same year. They continued until 1931 when the Great Depression stopped them. They tried again in the late 30's with the Ro-Trak but failed due to material shortages in W W II. Albert Espe was an ancestor of mine who grew up in Lee County, Ill. His father (Little Ole), fled Illinois over a beating he took from an Irishman over a horse Ole was sold that was nightblind. When Ole complained about the bad deal, the Irishman returned with 7 friends and nearly beat him to death. The family moved to Crookston, Minnesota shorlty after that. I know that doesn't answer your question but it does give you a little Avery history.

Dear Mr. Joel Espe, 1-6-06 Little Ole was my great grandfathers Dad. My greatgrandfathers name was Julius Espe, brother to Albert Espe. I was looking for information on the cod tractor that he had patented and manufactured in Crookston Mn. Sincerely, Richard Aanerud

Thanks for the interesting facts about the Avery Co. Your ancestor worked for the Avery Threshing Machine Co. which was reorganized as the Avery Power Machinery Co. in 1924. It was out of Peoria, Ill. Gary's Model V was made by BF Avery & Sons of Louisville, Ky. which was an entirely different company. BF Avery was absorbed by Minneapolis Moline in 1951. We have a Ro-Trak from the Avery Power Machinery Co. and a Model V from the BF Avery Co.

I have an Avery V, s/n 6V-305. I think that makes it a 1951, and the hood badge says MM Avery, model V. It was painted MM's yellow. I can't see any evidence of decals left on the hood, so I don't know what it had on it originally, if any. The front axle is an adjustable tube-type, which I understand is one of the differences made by MM. Also has a different type seat suspension from the BF Avery's. Haven't got to restore it yet, don't know if I will. Got to many irons in the fire. Good luck.

Your tractor was made by the BF Avery Co. of Louisville, Ky. They were a southern company. They started out about 1825 making tillage implements. They made small tractors for gardens and small farms. There was also an Avery Threshing Machine Co. of Peoria, Ill. which made the big tractors and steam engines. They were not connected to this Avery, an entirely different company.

Even though you have a BF Avery, your hood decal should say just "AVERY". I'm not sure why they did that on the V's. Maybe there simply was not enough room for the "BF" on that cute little hood !!!

It is only supposed to say BF Avery on the hood.
