After much internet research i have come to the conclusion the tractor i have is a Cleveland Tractor Co. General GG model tractor, marketed as a Co-Op tractor. It has the model IXK3 Hercules engine;serial #688685. (engine Serial #'s for GG's marketed as Co-Op start at 682538)They were made from 1939-1942. Mine does no longer have a serial number for the tractor on the frame. Can anyone tell me the approximate tractor serial#,using the engine#,so i can find out the year? Also mine is painted green similar to an Oliver(Cletrac)HG crawler. It appears to be original paint,in spots where the paint has deteriorated it's yellow/orange?,underneath. What have i got? What color should it be repainted? I need the raparound front sheetmetal grille. anyone got one? What decals should i have? General? Co-OP? Avery? Oliver? Thanks for any help on this.

Where exactly are you looking on the frame for the serial number? On my model A Avery, it is hand stamped in the steel unit that is riveted and welded to the back of the right-side frame rail. This in turn bolts up to the transmission/differential unit. The number is in the upper surface of this connection part. Look very carefully, it might be there since some of the numbers were not stamped very deeply.

I have to agree with Mike. I have never been able to find a serial number index for dating the Hercules motors based on the engine serial number. As Mike says, you can date the engine from it's casting date behind the mag. If the motor has been swapped you will be out of luck. How did you arrive at the conclusion that it is a Co-op ? If you are finding yellow/orange paint, it could be a General (GG) as that was their original color. If it is a Co-op the same red as the Twinrow's, and later BF Avery A's is in order. My guess is that the green was someone's fleet color, or personal preference. You will want Co-op decals if it is a Co-op, or General decals if it is a General. I have a mint condition grill for that tractor. E-mail me direct if your interested.

There were two different grille designs for that tractor were there not? At least for the Avery A versions. The early ones were the same as the General GG's and then the later ones became a bit more styled. I guess Brian might want one of the earlier ones I imagine.

Clevland tractor company built tractors for Co-Op,they were the same as the General but painted red like the Wards Twin Row.The seriel # should be on an aluminum plate on the right tractor rail on the side of the rail not stamped like the BF Avery A's.Should be a seriel # plate like the General or the Wards Twin row.The only one I have seen was at the show in New Haven this summer and I did not get a picture of it.It had CO-OP decals wher the the Avery has theres. You can go by the # on the engine to find out when motor was built like Alberta Mike said.

Redtractorman, Did that Co-op you saw in New Haven identify it as such on the aluminum serial tag ? I have seen many Twinrows, and the serial tags clearly identified that the tractor was manufactured by Clevland Tractor Co. for Montgomery Wards. The Generals clearly stated that they were GG Generals. I have never seen a Co-op, or a Massey Harris General, and I was wondering if the same was true of their serial tags. See ya on the web, Esev

Where exactly are you looking on the frame? I would think that it would be a longshot to ID the tractor year or make from the engine serial number. The casting date of the engine block should be on the right side of the engine behind the carb area but that doesn't tell you too much. If you email me at the above "blue" link for my name, I can email you a history page that I have made up on these tractors (most specifically the General GG and the Avery A) that will be interesting for anybody with one of those models.
